    The decision on whether to approve a new road tunnel under the Thames has been delayed by a further six months.

    Transport Minister Paul Maynard said the delay would allow the department to consider the project's environmental impacts, external.

    The Green Party said the tunnel will "do huge harm to the health and wellbeing of Londoners".

    However, a spokesman for the mayor of London said the Silvertown Tunnel would provide significant benefits for London.

    A decision was due in October, but days before an expected announcement, the government pushed back its deadline to 10 November.

    A decision is now expected on 10 May 2018.

    Ahead of his special at the BBC, which airs tonight on BBC One, I've been catching up with London-born singer Sam Smith.

    Backstage at the BBC's studios in Elstree, Sam is wandering around in a silk kimono and ruby red stilettos.

    "Babe, I don't understand," he complains down his phone. "They're letting Fearne [Cotton] wear heels, so why can't I wear heels?"

    Don't worry, he's not gone full Mariah. It's all in aid of a sketch for his TV special, Sam Smith at the BBC, which airs on Thursday.

    In real life, the singer tries his best to remain humble. "I don't ask for puppies in my dressing room," he laughs.

    Chelsea striker Eniola Aluko says she has had no support from most of her England team-mates since her racial abuse case and questioned whether the squad's "togetherness" was "just a hashtag on Twitter".

    After three inquiries, former England manager Mark Sampson was found to have used discriminatory language to two players - Aluko and Drew Spence.

    The Football Association has since apologised for its handling of the case, adding there was "much to learn from this episode".

    But Aluko, who has won 102 caps and lost her place in the team after making unproven allegations of bullying in a 2016 FA cultural review, says she has had no communication from her international team-mates, except for those she plays with at Chelsea.

    British Transport Police, external are celebrating 100 years of women being employed to keep the railways crime-free.

    Margaret Hood, a single parent to two children, became the first female police officer working on the railways when she was employed as a sergeant by the Great Eastern Railway Company Police at Liverpool Street station in 1917.

    Her appointment created interest in the national media, with the Daily Mirror describing the decision to employ her as an “interesting experiment”, according to the BTP.

    Supt Gill Murray said the force "couldn’t let this milestone pass us by without celebrating the success of women in policing the railway".

    "It was unheard of for a woman to reach the more senior ranks 100 years ago, so it is very pleasing and a very proud moment for me to see women represented in all ranks," she said.

  7. Jury retires in reality TV star ex-boyfriend acid attack trialpublished at 15:40 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November 2017

    The jury in the trial of Arthur Collins, who is accused of carrying out an acid attack in a packed east London nightclub have retired to deliberate.

    The 25-year-old, who is the ex-boyfriend of reality TV star Ferne McCann, was charged along with Andre Phoenix, 21, after a corrosive substance was hurled over a crowd at Mangle E8 in Dalston on 17 April.

    Mr Collins, of Broxbourne, Hertfordshire, denies five counts of grievous bodily harm with intent, and nine counts of actual bodily harm against 14 people.

    Mr Phoenix, of Clyde Road, Tottenham, north London, denies four counts of GBH and two counts of ABH.

    They have been on trial at Wood Green Crown Court.

  8. North Finchley house fire under controlpublished at 15:29 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November 2017

    A fire at a house on Nether Street in North Finchley has been contained.

    Firefighters were called to the blaze at around midday today. Six fire engines and 35 firefighters had it contained by 14:14.

    Half of a first floor flat and part of a roof void were damaged by fire in the semi-detached house, which has been converted into flats, the London Fire Brigade said.

    The cause of the fire is under investigation.

    Michael Bond is still sadly missed since he died in June, but he left us a present - one last adventure for Paddington Bear.

    Paddington at St Paul's, the author's last book, will be released next year on the anniversary of his death.

    The book sees Bond's beloved creation mistaken for a choirboy during a visit to the famous London landmark.

    The news coincides with the release of the Paddington 2 film and a few days before Bond's memorial, external at St Paul's.

    The Victoria And Albert Museum will be putting a huge section of a 1970s east London estate on display in its galleries.

    Robin Hood Gardens, in Poplar, is famous for its Brutalist style of architecture.

    The dilapidated estate is being knocked down after a campaign by architects including Lord Richard Rogers and Lord Norman Foster failed to save it.

    The museum's exhibition will feature a three-storey section of the estate which is nearly 9m high, more than 5m wide and 8m deep.

    A murder investigation has been launched after a man was stabbed in east London.

    The 21-year-old victim was found in Pier Road, North Woolwich on Wednesday evening.

    He died in hospital of his injuries.

    The Met Police said they believe they know the identity of the man, but are awaiting formal identification.

    A post-mortem examination will be arranged in due course.

  17. Croydon tram crash: Public transport 'should be safe', says mayorpublished at 13:02 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November 2017

    Sadiq Khan has marked the one-year anniversary of the Croydon tram crash by insisting public transport should be "a place where people are always safe".

    The mayor of London made the comment as he attended a memorial service for the seven people killed in the derailment in south-east London.

    Seven people died when the commuter tram overturned on 9 November 2016.

    A stone plinth has been erected near the crash site at Sandilands Junction, and a new communal area has been built in nearby New Addington.
