    As many as one in 25 people are classed as homeless in Newham, a new study has shown.

    The east London borough was found to have the highest proportion of homelessness in the country, in the study by homeless charity Shelter.

    Across England more than 268,000 people were found to be homeless, although the charity said the number is a "conservative estimate" with many more expected to be going unrecorded.

    The government said it was "determined to tackle all forms of homelessness".

  5. New pedestrian crossing proposed between Rotherhithe and Canary Wharfpublished at 18:38 Greenwich Mean Time 8 November 2017

    A public consultation has opened into a possible new bridge to be built over the Thames between Rotherhithe and Canary Wharf.

    The crossing, proposed by Transport for London, would be for pedestrians and cyclists and is intended as an alternative for those travelling between Canada Water and Canary Wharf on the Jubilee line.

  6. Tunneling work completed on Northern line extensionpublished at 18:37 Greenwich Mean Time 8 November 2017

    Tunneling work for the Northern line extension has been completed after the boring machine - known as Amy - broke through at Kennington earlier.

    The work means the two tunnels, which measure two miles (3.2km) and run from Battersea Power Station via Nine Elms, have now been built.

    The extension to the Charing Cross branch of the Northern line is due to be completed in 2020.

    It is the first major extension to a Tube line since the Jubilee line in the late 1990s.

    Almost 20 years after they starred together in Notting Hill, the two Hughs have reunited for another London based movie - Paddington 2.

    "When I first saw Bonneville, I threw him to the floor and tried to kiss him, which is what we used to do," says Grant, who plays the film's villain, washed-up actor Phoenix Buchanan.

    "But he's so old now, he put his back out. It cost us a couple of days filming."

    The Queen has reopened the Sir Joseph Hotung Gallery of China and South Asia at the British Museum, 25 years after she unveiled the original gallery.

    The revamped gallery features displays telling the stories of China and the South Asian countries of India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Nepal from 5000 BC up to the present day.

    Celebrity chef and restaurateur Antonio Carluccio has died at the age of 80, his agent says.

    He was known for the Italian restaurant chain that carries his surname and for appearing on TV programmes, including the BBC Two hit Two Greedy Italians, alongside chef Gennaro Contaldo.

    From north-west Italy, Carluccio worked as a journalist in Turin before moving to Vienna and Germany, and finally London.

    In 2007, he received an OBE from the Queen for his services to the catering industry and in 2012 he was awarded the AA hospitality lifetime achievement award.

    He received the Commendatore, the equivalent of a British knighthood, from the Italian government in 1998 for services to Italy.

    International development secretary Priti Patel is on her way to Downing Street to learn her fate, after being ordered back from Africa by the prime minister, the BBC understands.

    Ms Patel, who sparked controversy after holding unauthorised meetings with Israeli politicians, cut short an official visit to Uganda and arrived at Heathrow Airport shortly after 15:00.

    Her flight was being tracked by more than 22,000 people online, according to website Flightradar 24.

    BBC political editor Laura Kuenssberg said "some kind of development" was expected today and Ms Patel's sacking seemed "almost inevitable now".
