    More than 2,000 people are at a thanksgiving service marking 70 years since the arrival of Caribbean migrants on the Empire Windrush ship to the UK.

    Hymns including Amazing Grace were played on steel drums as guests, including families of the Windrush generation, entered Westminster Abbey.

    The migrants were among the first to be recruited to rebuild post-war Britain.

    But there continues to be concern over a scandal which saw some of the generation wrongly face deportation.

    As the music played in the abbey, Baroness Floella Benjamin was applauded as she briefly danced in the nave.

  3. Three charged for moped-enabled smash and grabspublished at 13:31 British Summer Time 22 June 2018

    Three people have been charged in relation to two moped-enabled smash and grabs after police warrants in addresses across north London.

    Officers made four arrests after executing seven warrants in Camden, Islington and Haringey on Wednesday.

    Henry Histon, 18, of Gilbert Place, has been charged with conspiracy to commit robbery, grievous bodily harm with intent and aggravated burglary with intent.

    Alfie Warry, 20, of Baldwins Gardens, has been charged with aggravated burglary.

    A 17-year-old male has been charged with conspiracy to commit robbery and grievous bodily harm with intent..

    They appeared at Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court yesterday and will next appear at Blackfriars Crown Court on 9 July.

    A 22-year-old man was also arrested but was released under investigation.

    The 38-year-old man held for making bomb threats at Charing Cross station this morning has been detained under the mental health act, British Transport Police has said.

    The force said no weapon or device was found.

    Delays of up to 15 minutes are expected on Southern rail services between West Croydon and Sutton due to an earlier signal fault.

    Northern Line services through Charing Cross station were briefly suspended as police dealt with a customer incident, but all services have now re-opened.

    On the Central and Piccadilly Line, Holborn station is exit only because of a problem with the escalators

    Customers are warned that trains on the Thameslink network continue to be subject to alteration or cancellation as the new timetable is implemented.

  12. Man arrested after security threat at Charing Cross stationpublished at 08:18 British Summer Time 22 June 2018

    A man has been arrested after a security threat at Charring Cross station.

    Charing Cross railway and underground stations were closed as British Transport Police (BTP) dealt with the incident this morning.

    They were called at 06:35 BST to reports of a man on the underground tracks claiming to have a bomb, the BTP said.

    Our reporter Amanda Akass is at the scene and tweeted the below video of emergency services outside the station a short time ago.
