Transport for London's Oyster card and contactless payment travel system is to be extended, the Department for Transport (DfT) has announced.

The card, introduced in 2003, allows passengers to pay-as-you-go when travelling on public transport within the London fare zones.

Its extension, due in early 2019, will include Hertford North, Welwyn Garden City, Luton Airport Parkway and Epsom.

The rail minister said it would make "access to the capital even easier".

It's Christmas slime - but there's no need to be afraid of Tate Britain's sluggish festive commission.

After all, nothing says Yuletide like two giant illuminated leopard slugs outside a major London gallery.

Measuring more than 10m (33ft), the mighty molluscs will remain in situ until 25 February.

Monster Chetwynd's gastropod-inspired artwork also includes swathes of blue and white LED slug trails across the facade of the building.

Fare freezes across the Transport for London (TfL) network will continue for the third successive year.

Sadiq Khan promised to freeze fares until 2020 during his campaign for Mayor of London.

The announcement comes amid warnings of a "financial crisis" at TfL, following the Crossrail's delayed launch.

Mr Khan said: "Keeping transport fares affordable is a vital part of encouraging more people out of their cars and onto cleaner public transport.

"Our TfL fares freeze is in contrast to the failing private rail companies, who are once again hitting London's suburban rail passengers with an unjustified fares hike."

A nine-year-old girl who uses a prosthetic blade has climbed to the top of London's O2 Arena for charity.

Macey Hand managed to raise £1,000 for an organisation that supports youngsters who have lost limbs, with her climb.

Macey, from Shropshire, had to have her foot amputated after she was born, and was one of the first children in England to receive a running blade on the NHS.

She has now set her sights on taking part in a sky dive and also wants to complete a bungee jump.

Tower Hamlets residents have two weeks left to tell the council which services they would least like to see cut.

The local authority says it needs to save an extra £44million by 2022 and has launched the ‘Your Borough, Your Future’ survey, external.

The questionnaire asks local residents, businesses and community groups what they would like to see prioritised and where they would like to see spending cuts take place.

It also asks whether residents would support a council tax increase of three per cent in order to bring in an extra £3million per year.

Tower Hamlets mayor John Biggs said the administration had already shaved £38million from expenses since introducing a three-year budget in 2017.

East Dulwich is hosting a free Christmas festival tomorrow.

Now in its seventh year, the Christmas Cracker will include choirs, bands and performance groups, market stalls and exhibits by local artists.

The event, funded by Southwark Council, will be held from 11:00 to 17:00 BST on Lordship Lane and North Cross Road.

Members of a town centre mosque have urged their council to re-think its regeneration scheme and the impact it is having on parking for worshippers.

Harrow Central Mosque, in Station Road, handed a petition with some 2,000 signatures at a full Harrow Council meeting yesterday.

It is particularly concerned with the Poet’s Corner development, near Harrow Civic Centre, which is part of the council’s ‘Building a Better Harrow’ programme.

This project, which will include a redesign of the current civic centre once council offices move to Wealdstone, will provide community facilities and hundreds of homes.

But the mosque is worried that this will have a serious impact on parking for those wishing to visit it.

It pointed out that parking is already strained at busy times such as during Ramadan and urged the council to guarantee sufficient spaces if the development goes ahead.

The council did not comment on the specifics of the Poet’s Corner development, but Cllr Keith Ferry, responsible for planning, assured the mosque that it “will try to accommodate as much as possible”.

PC Adam Provan carried out a "brazen and calculated" attack on the 16-year-old, the Met says.

A man has been arrested on suspicion of GBH following a reported assault on the eastbound Central Line platform at Queensway Tube station.

British Transport Police (BTP) were called shortly after 13:00 and sent officers - including armed police.

The man who was detained was treated by paramedics - as was another man, according to the BTP.

While emergency services dealt with the incident, Queensway Tube station was shut, but Transport for London say the station has since reopened.

An investigation is now underway to understand how both men became injured.

The opening of a new homelessness assessment centre designed to help tackle the problem of rough sleepers in Newham has been delayed.

A 20-bed hub, staffed by specialists in mental health and drug and alcohol treatment, was announced by new mayor Rokhsana Fiaz in June and was due to be up and running in October.

But “teething problems” have postponed the opening. The centre will be based at Caritas Anchor House, in Barking Road, after plans to set up elsewhere in the borough fell through.

The charity is currently building an extension and 10 beds will be available on 17 December, a Newham council spokeswoman said. The full facility will not be open until next year.
