The number of rape cases reported to police in the City of London in the last year is 80% higher than the previous 12 months after a "trend" in rapes at hotels, new figures reveal.
There were 27 reported rapes in the Square Mile in the year to September 2018 compared with 15 in the previous year, a report released by the City of London Police said, external.
The force said its Public Protection Unit (PPU) was raising awareness about a "recent trend around hotels being linked to rapes and issues around consent".
The report added: "Next quarter PPU and crime will be working on raising awareness of safeguarding in hotels which will involve working to identify risk based scenarios which may arise at check in to assess whether check in / reception staff are able to identify signs of vulnerability or exploitation and deal with these appropriately when paying customers are checking in."
The increase in rapes is part of an overall increase in crime in the City of 20% since September 2017, which also saw triple the number of robberies of personal property and quadruple the number of robberies of commercial property.
Assistant Commissioner Alistair Sutherland said the upwards trend was part of a national increase in crime. He added that he would increase police visibility on City streets, the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) said.
The report also showed that satisfaction in the police has dropped from 75% in 2017/18 to 60% in 2018/19.
“It is extremely disappointing. One of the things we pride ourselves on is victim service,” Mr Sutherland told the LDRS.

The victim, 26, was found with stab wounds on Kingsland Road, Hackney, at 06:29 GMT on Friday by police.
He was taken to hospital but died at about 08:39.
Police believe he was attacked following a night out at the Rolling Stock bar.
Det Insp Rita Tierney is leading the murder investigation.

“This area has a busy bar and nightlife scene and people would have been in and around the area. We are keen to hear from anyone who has information about what happened and who was involved."
