  3. Police facial recognition 'needs considerable investment'published at 08:49 Greenwich Mean Time 28 November 2018

    Facial recognition

"Considerable investment" is needed to get consistency from the police's use of facial recognition, according to a university study.

South Wales Police has used automated facial recognition (AFR) technology at several events in Cardiff since the Champions League final in June 2017.

The study found the accuracy of AFR has improved since its introduction, but does worsen in bad light or big crowds.

The Metropolitan Police used facial recognition at London's Notting Hill carnival in 2016 and 2017 and at a Remembrance Sunday event.

Its system incorrectly flagged 102 people as potential suspects and led to no arrests.

One of the cars was pursued by police for a short time, but the pursuit was abandoned due to the extremely dangerous driving of the suspects’ vehicle. The second car was not pursued.

Near to the scene, six suspects on foot were challenged by a police officer. PC Christie Donald had one suspect run towards her which, gave the officer cause to activate her taser.

Two suspects were arrested and taken into police custody. A firearm and ammunition were recovered.

There are four to six outstanding suspects, police said.

    Quote Message

Whilst this turned out to be a burglary of a cannabis factory the response by my officers including, PC Christie Donald challenging the suspects as they ran towards her, tasering one and recovering the firearm demonstrates the split second, potentially life or death decision making, that officers are required to make every day. I am immensely proud of Christie and all the team."

  16. Brent vows to tackle rogue landlordspublished at 16:39 Greenwich Mean Time 27 November 2018

    Local Democracy Reporting Service

Brent Council has promised to improve the private rented sector (PRS) in the borough by tackling rogue landlords and advancing tenants’ rights.

A motion backed at a full council meeting last night agreed to support renters’ unions and ensure that privately-rented properties are maintained to an appropriate standard.

The council also vowed to support the abolition of the section 21 ‘no fault eviction’ policy, which allows landlords to turf out renters without reason.

Cllr Michael Maurice said: “I think it’s disgraceful that rogue landlords are able to operate and exploit vulnerable people.

“This has been going on for ages and we seem to still be getting it today.

“It’s not right for people on low incomes – they deserve to live somewhere nice, they need to have their rights and they need to have security.

“Around five per cent of landlords spoil it for else, because there are lots of good landlords out there.

"These sharks give everyone a bad name and I do hope that they are caught, and the courts find them huge amounts of money to stop them operating in this way.”
