Paul Feeney, chief executive of wealth management firm Quilter, is open about his past mental health issues.

Generally, though, he says, people in the City feel: "If I talk about it I'll lose my job."

"I've been in the City now for 30 years, I believe it's still now a really big stigma."

It's a view mirrored in new research showing only 46% of financial services staff would be confident talking to managers about mental ill health.

The research, which has been shared exclusively with the BBC, was carried out by the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment (CISI), the professional body for those working in wealth management and capital markets.

Data shows almost half of the UK's suspended officers have been off-duty for at least a year.

One, who has retrained as a priest, told the BBC he has spent five years being paid "unnecessarily" for a job he does not want to do.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) said it must do better.

  18. Taser officers more likely to use force, study suggestspublished at 16:58 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2018

Police officers carrying Tasers are both more likely to be assaulted and to use force against suspects, a new study has suggested.

Researchers at the University of Cambridge found City of London officers armed with the electroshock weapons were almost 50% more likely to use force in the line of duty, and also faced twice as many assaults as unarmed colleagues.

Between June 2016 and June 2017, researchers randomly allocated 400 frontline shifts a Taser-carrying officer and compared the results to an equal number of unarmed shifts over the same period.

Use of force by police carrying Tasers was found to be 48% higher than the officers on unarmed shifts.

Six physical assaults against police were also recorded for Taser-carrying officers while those who did not have the devices were attacked three times.

Dr Barak Ariel, from the Cambridge Institute of Criminology, said: "The presence of Tasers appears to provoke a pattern where suspects become more aggressive toward officers, who in turn respond more forcefully."

However, the Police Federation said they had "some serious concerns about the veracity of the results".

“The City of London is a small force with a unique policing set up and fewer than 700 officers – only a small percentage of whom police on the frontline," Vice Chair Ché Donald said.
