1. Mayor to install air quality monitors at hospitals in London’s most polluted areaspublished at 14:44 Greenwich Mean Time 22 March 2019

Ten hospitals in the most polluted areas of London will be equipped with new air quality monitors to measure levels of toxic air.

The Mayor’s new hospital monitors will support the NHS by providing real-time air quality measurements that will allow health professionals to take appropriate action to protect patients and employees – for example, warning patients about high pollution episodes and advising which hospital entrances have the lowest levels of pollution, the Mayor's office said.

The first monitor is already up and running at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital, with others due to be installed shortly at the Trust’s other three hospitals The Royal London, Whipps Cross and Newham Hospitals, as well as at Great Ormond Street Hospital, the Royal Free Hospital, Guy’s Hospital and St Thomas’ Hospital and other NHS sites in London.

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan said: “Vulnerable hospital patients are more susceptible to the harmful effects of our toxic air pollution health crisis that harms lung growth and is linked to asthma, cancer and dementia. I am working with London’s leading hospitals to install air pollution monitors and help find new ways to reduce pollution and protect patients."

  8. Major Tube works 'impossible' without government moneypublished at 12:47 Greenwich Mean Time 22 March 2019

Transport for London has said it will not be able to follow through on plans to upgrade the Tube network without capital funding from the government.

The transport network said the lack of certainty of funding beyond 2021 posed "significant challenges" for projects needing major investment, such as the planned introduction of new trains and signalling on the Piccadilly Line.

"Such large-scale investment will not be possible without capital funding from the government," TfL said in an announcement as part of the release of the transport network's draft budget, external for 2019/20.

It cited delays to the Crossrail project as another cause of financial difficulties.

The draft budget is being presented to the TfL Board for approval next week.

TfL said a "relentless focus on efficiency" meant it will almost halve its operational deficit to £500m by the end of the current financial year - a sum £155m lower than previously forecast.

But the network said it has had to manage the impact of an average reduction of around £700m per year in government grant by pausing certain projects, such as improving London’s roads.

The daughter of a man who died inside a betting shop has claimed the Met Police "being too stretched" affected the outcome of the murder investigation.

Babatunde Awofeso, 53, died on 4 April after being punched at a Betfred branch in Upper Clapton Road, Hackney.

City of London Police took the case on to help the Met cope with a spike in homicides in early April 2018.

A 26-year-old suspect was later told he had "no crime to answer" and the murder case was closed in November.

A new fast rail link has come a step closer after the order of five high speed trains.
