  6. London Tram strike planned over 'unfair pay'published at 15:08 Greenwich Mean Time 21 March 2019

A strike could bring trams to a standstill in south London next Thursday after nearly all members of the ASLEF union have voted to go on strike

Staff say they have not been offered good enough pay and working conditions and the union claims that tram drivers are not paid as much staff in similar roles across Transport for London (TfL).

Finn Brennan, ASLEF’s organiser on Tramlink, said: “Despite six months of talks, management are not prepared to make an offer that recognises that our members do a difficult and stressful job and deserve to be properly rewarded.

“Staff on Tramlink are paid much less than those in similar roles in other TfL modes and want to see real improvements to reflect the responsible job they do.

“I urge management to make a seriously improved offer to avoid the necessity to take strike action.”

Drivers are responsible for getting 80,000 people where they need to go on the 30 trams that run between Wimbledon, Croydon, Elmers End and Beckenham.

FirstGroup which runs the Trams on behalf of TfL has been contacted for a comment.
