    Shell is to close its Manchester office where 500 people are employed.

    Staff at the oil giant's site in Wythenshawe have been offered redeployment to the firm's headquarters in London. 

    It is part of plans to cut jobs and close several offices in the wake of falling oil prices.

    A series of short films are being made around Manchester to help raise awareness of homelessness, mental health issues and addiction.

    The charity Acting on Impulse is running the project to help people's understanding of the issues.

    The films will be screened at Home in Manchester in July.

    Salford Red Devils have confirmed they will sign Castleford winger Justin Carney on a three-year deal from next season.

    The 27-year-old Australian is on a season-long loan with Salford, having missed the end of last season with Castleford through suspension.

    Police are becoming increasingly concerned for the whereabouts of 89-year-old man who is missing from his home in Denton.

    Victor Murry was last seen at his home on Manor Road in Denton at 00:30 on Sunday.

    Mr Murry is quite unsteady on his feet and gets tired easily.   

  10. Former officer sentenced for committing misconduct in public officepublished at 16:55 British Summer Time 25 April 2016

    A former police officer has been sentenced for committing misconduct in a public office after he targeted three vulnerable women.

    Darren Bromley, 40, of Gloucester Road, Middleton, admitted three counts of misconduct in a public office.   

    He was given a suspended sentence, 200 hours' unpaid work and ordered to pay £2,500 prosecution costs.

    A student who bounced his way into the record books has been stripped of the accolade after it emerged a marathon route was too short.

    In April 2014 Jack Sexty completed the Greater Manchester Marathon on a pogo stick in 16 hours and 24 minutes.  

    But earlier this month the course was found to be 380m too short and all timings for the 2013, 2014 and 2015 events were declared null and void.

    A 37-year-old van driver is in a critical condition after a collision in Farnworth.

    His silver Ford transit van collided with a tree on the bend in Plodder Lane at 13:15 on Saturday.

    He is said to be in a "life-threatening" condition in hospital and police are appealing for witnesses to the incident, adding that no other vehicles were involved.

    A man who died in a head-on collision in Hazel Grove on Sunday has been named.

    Philip Clayton, 43, died following a collision on Buxton Road between a Mini and a Volvo at about 16:00 yesterday.

    A 23-year-old man who was also injured remains in a critical condition in hospital.

    Transport for Greater Manchester is advising people to make alternative travel plans and allow extra time for journeys as work continues to repair a major system failure on the Metrolink network.

    It advises people should "avoid travelling" at peak times - between 16:00 and 19:00 - and use replacement bus services.

    An Asda supermarket in Manchester is introducing a "quiet hour" to help autistic shoppers who can feel stressed by noise.

    The Cheetham Hill Asda Living store will turn off escalators, screens and music for an hour on Saturday 7 May.

    Customers will also be offered a picture map of the supermarket.
