  3. Tram passengers complain about lack of informationpublished at 14:34 British Summer Time 25 April 2016

    Tram passengers delayed by the communications failure affecting the whole Metrolink network have been speaking to BBC Radio Manchester.

    One woman said: "There's no information - there's nothing. On those monitors up there there's nothing telling us. I have just tried customer services and nobody is picking up."

    A man added: "They should have an announcement shouldn't they? Some loud speaker or something."

  5. Christie Hospital 'most advanced' outside of North Americapublished at 13:58 British Summer Time 25 April 2016

    The Christie Hospital has been named the 'most technogically advanced cancer centre' in the world outside North America.

    Top Masters in Healthcare website researched 100 top cancer centres across the world and ranked them according to the level of technology available for treatment and diagnosis.   

    The Christie was awarded 9th place in the world.  

  6. Metrolink director 'unable to control network' due to faultpublished at 13:36 British Summer Time 25 April 2016

    Metrolink director Peter Cushing told BBC Radio Manchester: "We can't see them [trams] on the control mimic screens so we can't see anything and we are unable to control the network."

    He said they had all their engineers on site to find out where the fault is.

    "We are not expecting it to be too long, we have identified it is a comms failure and we are hoping it is going to be relatively quick," he added.  

  7. Trams suspended due to communications faultpublished at 13:19 British Summer Time 25 April 2016

    All tram services in Greater Manchester remain suspended while work continues to identify a communications fault.

    The fault, at 11:30, means network control room staff cannot monitor tram movements or access information displays.  

    Peter Cushing, director of Metrolink, said they were working as quickly as possible to identify and fix the fault and he apologised to customers.

  8. Firefighters rescue teenager stuck in mud in Burypublished at 13:07 British Summer Time 25 April 2016

    A 17-year-old boy has been rescued by firefighters after getting stuck knee-deep in mud in Bury.

    Firefighters were called to Elton Sailing Club at about 14:30 on Sunday, after a 17-year-old boy became stuck up to his knees in mud.

    Crews from Bury, Whitefield and Heywood’s water rescue unit attended and put a cordon in place.

  11. Gun fired in Harpurhey at social services buildingpublished at 12:27 British Summer Time 25 April 2016

    Gun shots were fired at a social services building in Harpurhey over the weekend, police have said.

    Police were called to the Manchester Children's Social Services building in Moston Lane at 07:00 on Monday.  

    Bullet shell casings were found and the building's door was damaged in an incident, which happened between the early hours of Sunday and today.

    A driver was threatened with a gun by another man, external as he sat in traffic along the Mancunian Way.

    The 22-year-old victim was driving his car on the busy commuter route when he became aware of a man in a Vauxhall Vectra trying to get through at the Cambridge Street junction roundabout.

    The hall closed to visitors in September 2014 for major refurbishments after a £1.6m grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

    A family in Oldham is pleading with the government not to deport an elderly and frail relative to Pakistan.

    Hakeem Muhammad Haleem, 77, is partially blind - and suffers from dementia and diabetes. He has been cared for by relatives since his wife died in 2011.  

    The Home Office says he must return to his home country - his family say there's no-one to look after him and he is likely to die.

    Representatives from British Home Stores have told the BBC that the retailer will be placed into administration today.

    The 11,000 staff who work for the company are expected to be told the news in an hour's time.   

    BHS has eight stores in Greater Manchester, one in Warrington, Cheshire, and one at Handforth Dean near Wilmslow.
