    A building used by Greater Manchester Police (GMP) in Tameside has been evacuated after a suspicious package was sent there.

    Bomb disposal teams were called to Nexus House in Ashtron-under-Lyne and are carrying out an controlled explosion nearby.

    Staff will be allowed back into the building shortly, said a GMP spokesman.

    A missing jumper could hold the key to the suspected murder of a woman who was found dead in a stable.

    The body of Ann Marie Pomphret, 49, was discovered in Burtonwood, Cheshire, on 2 November, and a 50-year-old man was later arrested on suspicion of murder.

    Cheshire Police have issued an image of a jumper they are looking for as part of their inquiry.

    Anyone who may have found the top discarded in the area has been urged to contact the force.

    Police are searching for a group of men after a knife attack in Manchester city centre during Wednesday evening's rush hour.

    A fight broke out shortly after 18:00 at Dale Street Car Park, close to Piccadilly Gardens.

    Three men were injured and taken to hospital before being discharged.

    Officers remain at the scene on Brewer Street and Dale Street this morning as inquiries continue.

    Plans to demolish a £10m college campus and build 108 homes in its place have been described as "outrageous".

    The proposals, for Warrington and Vale Royal College's Hartford site in Northwich, Cheshire, were unveiled to councillors, with the public and press given no access.

    The chairman of the college, which is working with a housing developer, said the campus was "financially unviable".

    However, Labour councillor Sam Naylor said it was "an absolute travesty".

    Failed robbery attempts at two banks in Liverpool are being probed by police.

    Police were alerted to the first attempt at Halifax on Allerton Road at around 15:30 GMT.

    A man demanded money with an unknown item in a bag but left empty-handed on foot, travelling towards Smithdown Road.

    The same man is thought to have targeted TSB on the same road a short time after, again leaving empty-handed.

    He is described as white, wearing dark clothes and a mask.

    Det Insp Lisa Ryan said: "Thankfully, these attempted robberies did not result in anything being stolen or anyone being hurt.

    "However, for staff and customers to be threatened in this way when carrying out their business, is extremely distressing so if you witnessed the incidents or have any information, let us know immediately."

    Merseyrail users travelling on the Wirral loop line face disruption over the Christmas holidays as work starts to upgrade platforms in readiness for the arrival of new trains in 2020.

    Stations on the loop line and Mersey River river crossing will temporarily close as the third phase of improvement works by Network Rail.

    • From 27 December to 2 January in Wirral,New Brighton and West Kirby trains will start and terminate at Birkenhead North.
    • In Liverpool city centre James Street will be closed and Liverpool Central and Moorfields will be closed to Wirral loop services - but will remain open for Northern line trains
    • From 27 December to 1 January Ellesmere Port and Chester trains will start and terminate at Birkenhead Central.

    Rail replacement buses will operate across the river - between Birkenhead Central station and Liverpool, and Birkenhead North station and Liverpool.

    Temperatures in the multi-storey car park on King's Dock in Liverpool reached 1,000C during the inferno on New Year's Eve 2017.

    Demolition was delayed while Liverpool City Council, motorists and insurers reached agreement over claims.

    Liverpool Mayor Joe Anderson said establishing a plan to dismantle the structure had been "hugely complex".
