Millions of pounds in damages are to be paid to a young girl who's brain was injured during her birth at the James Paget University Hospital in Gorleston seven years ago.

The settlement was approved by Mr Justice Edis at the High Court in London yesterday.

Alexander Hutton QC, who represents the hospital's NHS Foundation Trust made an apology on behalf of the trust, for the failures of care that led to the girl's "very grave injuries and severe disabilities".

He told the court there had been a "great deal of soul searching" in the hospital's midwifery and obstetrics department following the girl's birth, and that the trust had done its utmost to ensure there was no repeat of failings.

The lump sum payment of £2.1m, could be delayed due to a possible change in legal guidelines, said Mr Justice Edis, but the girl will receive some money immediately to fund her care, which would "substantially improve" the quality of her life and of those caring for her.

  9. Further thoughts from our rail commuterpublished at 10:54 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2016

    BBC News

So the slog to London continues - and there's a wry smile as the platform announcement encouraged us to "use the full length of the train for a more comfortable journey".

I'm not entirely sure this is "comfortable" and I'm hearing grumblings this isn't a direct train into Liverpool Street.

    Interior of rail replacement bus

"It's amazing how one broken down freight train can cause all this chaos," one person is overheard to say.

Another said: "There'll be some claim forms going in today."

Hmm, I'm wondering just how much today's delays are going to cost in compensation? It must run into the tens of thousands. And will it be the freight train company that has to compensate Greater Anglia?

Sadly no Christmas decorations to distract from the commuter misery on this stretch as we slowly head to the capital.

  10. The scene at Norwich stationpublished at 10:12 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2016

These pictures of Norwich station have just been sent to us by our reporter Wally Webb.

He told us it was "rather quiet", with one train just leaving for London and another arriving.

Claim forms are available online, or from staffed stations, and must be completed within 28 days of the delay.

Ticket restrictions on travel today have been lifted, following the cancellations of services due to a broken down freight train between Ipswich and Manningtree.

  12. The thoughts of a frustrated rail commuterpublished at 10:04 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2016

    Martin Barber
    BBC News

There was a quiet resignation at Ipswich station this morning as we arrived from Norwich at 08:25 - it was going to be another one of 'those days' on the commute to London.

I got the impression people don't have the energy to get angry and stressed about it any more. To be delayed is sadly the norm.

    • You've been delayed - again
    • You're waiting in the cold for a limited number of replacement buses - again
    • You must remember to fill in your delay repay form - again
    Interior of rail replacement bus

People were actually quite good humoured in the bus queue - resigned to the fact there's nothing you can do so you might as well make the best of it.

As I write I'm now stuck in traffic somewhere on the outskirts of Colchester. There's chatter on the bus about Christmas parties and buying a secret Santa. I feel slightly sorry for the chap who's going to get a hideous festive sweater at the princely sum of £5.98!

There isn't a view - it's all a bit too misty... but despite being horribly late - there is a sparkle on the horizon!

Our replacement bus was last used it seems to take festive holiday makers to Cornwall... the tinsel is still hanging from the ceiling.

  15. Passengers describe their frustration at latest rail delayspublished at 09:30 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2016

We've been speaking to rail passengers waiting in a queue at Ipswich station for a rail replacement bus.

    Among the comments:

    • "It's disgusting - I pay £600 a month for a season ticket and I'm going to be late for work - it's unacceptable"
    • "The service we're receiving is not up to standard. We're paying an absolute fortune to jump on a train, to then find we've got to stand outside in the cold with no-one from the train operating company actually offering us any apology"
    • "I have to do this every day and this isn't the first time I've been delayed frankly they should be putting more buses on and more help"

  20. Domestic violence prevention course 'changed me immensely'published at 08:38 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2016

    BBC Look East

A man who completed a domestic violence prevention course after punching his partner so hard she had to have plastic surgery said he will never forgive himself.

He said the course he took "changed me immensely".

He added: "One of the hardest questions I was ever asked was 'how does your partner feel about you?' I had nightmares that night, I cried, it made me realise what I had done. I'm a big guy and I intimidated her."

The news comes in the wake of a national study, published last week by domestic abuse charity Women's Aid, which said that between 2009 and 2015, 936 women were killed by men.
