    The former Conservative cabinet member Jim Prior has died.

    Lord Prior, who represented Lowestoft and Waveney, was 89.

  2. Fundraising for Paralympic swimming 'going well'published at 14:52 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2016

    The mother of one of Norfolk's most successful paralympians says fundraising to allow her to continue competing is going well. 

    Four-time Paralympic medallist Jessica-Jane Applegate lost nearly half of her funding from British Para-Swimming after she failed to get a personal best at the Rio Olympics. 

    Her funding is set to drop from £21,000 to £11,000 per year. 

    The money helped the swimmer pay for necessities such as travel and racing suits.

    Her mother Dawn says they spent 13 hours in the car yesterday, driving to Manchester where Jess had been competing all day, before driving home. After four hours sleep, Jessica-Jane was up again at 04:00 today to go training again.

  4. Fatal road crash photos 'graphic, but sadly very real'published at 13:40 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2016

    Suffolk Police has released photos of the road collision which killed 46-year-old Mark Smyth in Santon Downham.

    Raimondas Saveikis of Thetford has been jailed for four years and eight months for causing death by dangerous driving whilst under the influence of drink/drugs.

    The prosecution told Ipswich Crown Court he was also believed to have been using his mobile phone shortly before the crash and was on the wrong side of the road.

    Insp David Giles said: "The pictures of the scene are graphic, but they are sadly real. 

    "They have been released with the support of the family to highlight the very real danger of drink-driving and using your phone whilst driving, in the hope that their release will go some way to preventing further deaths on our roads."

    A vote on whether to ban disposable plastics at Norfolk County Council is to be taken by county councillors today.

    The Greens are pushing to get rid of single use plastic cups, cutlery and containers across the authority, replacing them with alternatives on the market. 

    The idea is to set standards for others to follow.

    Norwich City Council has already passed a similar motion that could see the city's market go plastic-free by the end of 2017.

  9. Prison sentence and disqualification for drink-driver who killed another motoristpublished at 12:37 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2016

    A man who admitted causing death by careless driving, while being over the legal drink-drive limit, has been sent to prison for 56 months.

    Appearing at Ipswich Crown Court, Raimondas Saveikis, 33, was also disqualified from driving for three and a half years.

    During the trial in November, the prosecution said initial scientific tests indicated that Saveikis, of Canons Walk, Thetford, could have had at least twice the legal level of alcohol in his blood at the time of the crash.

    Mark Smyth, 46, from Brandon, died following a collision on the B1107 at Santon Downham on 9 October, involving his Fiat and a Ford Mondeo driven by Saveikis.

     A charity walk to raise money for vulnerable veterans, external has had to be cancelled after one of the participants was injured.

    Ed Parker, co-founder of the charity Walking with the Wounded, and double-leg amputee war veteran Duncan Slater, set off from the charity's head office in London on Friday to walk to their north Norfolk office. They were expecting to arrive in Stody later today. 

    The pair were on schedule to get to Newmarket by Saturday evening, when disaster struck.

    Mr Parker tore some tendons in his hip and was unable to walk any further.   

    Following treatment at Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge, and the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, Mr Parker is now back at work... and limping around.

    He vows they won't be defeated, and will do the walk again next year.

    The walk has so far raised £3,000.

    A local man has been charged in connection with a serious assault in Norwich at the weekend.

    Emergency services were called to Heathgate on Saturday shortly after 07:30. 

    A man had serious head, chest and back injuries caused by a knife. He was taken for treatment at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, where he remains in a stable condition.

    Norfolk Police have charged a man with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and possession of a knife.

    You'd be forgiven for seeing red if you were at Eaton Park in Norwich yesterday.

    More than 400 Santas were running for charity... in aid of the East Anglia's Children's Hospices, external (EACH).

    The festive revellers, dressed in red and white, were running, or walking, 2km (1.2miles) in aid of the charity, which cares for children and young people with life-threatening conditions.
