  2. Royal Norfolk Show: Gove tells farmers 'I'm on your side'published at 15:36 British Summer Time 28 June 2017

The Environment Secretary Michael Gove who is at the Royal Norfolk Show has been speaking to the BBC about his new role.

He said that "the single most important thing" he can do is to listen to farmers.

"I'm on their side," he added.

    Michael Gove

The National Farmers' Union had expressed concern about the uncertainty Brexit has caused in the industry, saying many members are not feeling confident about investing in their businesses.

But Mr Gove confirmed that EU subsidies would continue to be paid until 2022 and said that leaving would be an opportunity for them "to produce more and sell more globally".

Norfolk produces most of the country's summer fruit and salads but fewer seasonal workers have come to the UK to work this year. Mr Gove said the economy would still be able to entice migrant workers to come to Britain.

"When it comes to seasonal working one of the things again that we've said is that the advisory committee will look at the needs of the rural economy and will report back on exactly what we need to do in order to make sure that our economy is strengthened not weakened as we leave," he added.

The 19-year-old, from Scarning, is talking to people on the emergency services stand flanked by his mangled car, which he had to be cut out of last summer after he crashed on the B1145 near Aylsham and hit trees.

The management trainee said he was "lucky to be alive" after driving too quickly in the wrong conditions around a bend.

He suffered 15 fractures, two operations and 26 stitches to his face following the crash on the rural road - the emergency services were guided to him by the light from his mobile phone after he managed to call 999.

He is now touring schools and colleges with the emergency services' #Impact project, external - which has just bought virtual reality headsets - to talk to young people about the realities of being in a car crash.

We'll bring you more on the headsets later.

They're being used to educate young people on safer driving by putting them in a virtual car crash.

"Obviously a keen Brexiteer and obviously Brexit gives our industry some challenges but we must see this as opportunity rather than a threat," he said.
