    A man has been arrested following a crash on the A47 Lynn Road in west Norfolk yesterday.

    It happened shortly after 11:30 when police were pursuing a vehicle between East Winch and Middleton.

    Following a chase, the Vauxhall Astra failed to stop near Swaffham, and collided with another vehicle and a telegraph pole.

    The road was shut for many hours for repairs, resulting in traffic chaos for the evening commute.

    The driver, a 32-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of several offences, including failing to stop for police, possession of a Class A drug and theft of a motor vehicle.

    Two teenagers have admitted their parts in an attack on another teenager in Norwich's Chapelfield Park which left him with a gaping head wound.

    News of their guilty pleas came in the trial of a 14-year-old and an 18-year-old who are accused of wounding and carrying weapons.

    The 15-year-old victim of the attack last November had a gaping wound from ear to scalp, Norwich Crown Court heard.

    Doctors said he'd been stabbed multiple times and needed plastic surgery. The court heard several members of the group produced knives and a metal bar during the attack.

  6. More social housing needed for Norfolk, says unionpublished at 16:50 British Summer Time 26 July 2017

    Councils in Norfolk need to make sure that more social housing is built across the county, the GMB union, external has said.

    Just 10% of the 3,000 new homes built in Norfolk last year were for council or housing association use, it said.

    That's one of the lowest figures in the country against a national average of 18%.

    Warren Kenny, from the GMB, said: "These figures are well below the numbers needed to meet the pent-up demand for new homes."

    The union said up to a third of new homes should be assigned for social housing.

    The government has said it has "ambitious plans" to encourage councils to build more homes.

    Steve Bagnall, managing director of Cambridge Live, which runs the festival, said: "Cambridge Folk Festival aims to lead the way with artist development, an ambition perfectly illustrated by Jake Bugg and Ward Thomas moving from The Den to the Main Stage.

    Alex Carson, of the Wooden Arms, told the BBC: "We're really looking forward to playing - we'll be playing a heap of new material from our upcoming record Trick of the Light out on 6 October."

    Jon Hart, of Honey & The Bear, said: "The national reputation of Cambridge as a cornerstone of great music speaks for itself, we're just thrilled to be part of such an iconic festival."

    Lucy Sampson, of Honey & The Bear, said: "Everyone we meet has a Cambridge story, its steeped in folklore itself now."

    BBC Local Radio for the East's Sue Marchant will be broadcasting from the festival on Sunday from 19:00.

  8. Top musicians come to Cambridge for folk festivalpublished at 16:35 British Summer Time 26 July 2017

    The Cambridge Folk Festival, external starts tomorrow and runs over the weekend. It will play host to some of the top folk singers and musicians from around the world.

    The event is being headlined by Jake Bugg, Frank Tuner and the Sleeping Souls (pictured below), and Loudon Wainwright III from the USA.

    It will also feature performances from Cambridge-based folk singer Emily Mae Winters, external (pictured below) and Norfolk band Morganway, external, both playing the Cambridge Folk Club, external tent on Friday night.

    The festival, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2014, is one of the longest running and most famous folk festivals in the world.

    Emily Mae Winters told the BBC: "I'm just so thrilled to be playing.

    "Its such an honour as it really is one of the most prestigious folk festivals in the world. What's brilliant and unique to Cambridge, is the breadth of folk that the festival celebrates and explores."

    Callum Morgan, of Morganway (pictured below), said the festival "has to be one of the most recognised and respected of its kind, and we're absolutely thrilled to be playing it for our first time this year.

    "The Cambridge Folk Club has been so supportive of this band and for them to invite us to play feels really special."

    The festival has been held every year since 1965 in the grounds of Cherry Hinton Hall and attracts about 14,000 people a year.

  10. Historian remembers WW2 fatal bombing in Cromer on 75th anniversarypublished at 16:03 British Summer Time 26 July 2017

    The lives of 11 people killed when four bombs were dropped on a seaside resort during World War Two are being marked this week with events in the town.

    They died 75 years ago this week when the bombing raid destroyed part of Garden Street (pictured) in Cromer.

    The Nazi bombers were flying back to their base when they made the devastating airstrike.

    Thirteen people were also hurt in the blast - including local historian Peter Stibbons.

    "They had to lift me out of the bomb crater," he said. "This is something that people still live with today in their memory."

    A flag ceremony was staged on Sunday and a tea party, featuring archive videos and photos, will be held on Thursday at Co-op Funeral Services in Garden Street between 13:00 and 16:00.

  11. Armed police called to King's Lynn incidentpublished at 16:00 British Summer Time 26 July 2017

    Armed police were called to King's Lynn after reports of threatening behaviour last night, the force has said.

    A man, in his 60s, was arrested on suspicion of making threats to kill following the incident in Wootton Road, Gaywood, at about 19:40.

    Norfolk police, external said no firearms were seized while the man was arrested and no-one was injured.

  12. Teen had ear sliced in half during park attack with 'foot-long' knifepublished at 15:22 British Summer Time 26 July 2017

    A teenager was set upon with weapons including a foot-long knife and an iron bar during an attack in which his ear was sliced in half, a court has heard.

    The victim required plastic surgery after the assault in Chapelfield Park, Norwich, and also suffered "significant" injuries to his neck, chest and hands.

    Two teenagers, aged 14 and 18, are on trial at the city's crown court following the attack last November.

    A group of youths had met another group in the park, the court was told.

    Prosecutor Lindsay Cox read a witness statement which described how the victim was "knocked to the floor and they were all kicking and punching him".

    The witness saw one boy - not one of those on trial - with a knife "about a foot-long and with a jagged edge", with which he "hit down" on the victim in a repeated stabbing motion.

    Another witness described how he saw one defendant with a small axe in his waistband during the attack on the victim with "a small machete".

    The two defendants, whom the judge has ordered can't be named, both deny wounding and carrying bladed articles. The trial continues.

    Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall have brandished their brollies while admiring an array of colourful blooms at Sandringham Flower Show, external today.

    They arrived in a horse-drawn carriage to inspect flowers and produce in the show tents on the royal estate.

    The couple also visited charity stands and greeted people in the huge crowd.

    The show is in its 136th year and attracts about 20,000 people each year.

    Nearly 120 jobs have been saved after a King's Lynn-based insurer has announced it will be taking over a Norwich call centre threatened with closure.

    Insurance broker Swinton revealed proposals in April to close its site in Rosary Road (pictured) as part of a national shake-up of its business.

    King's Lynn broker Adrian Flux now plans to move into the building, with 117 people switching to work for the firm between now and September.

    A spokesman said all 146 employees at the call centre have been offered jobs - and more people may yet choose to continue working at the site.

    Swinton Insurance said its review - with 900 jobs due to be axed by the end of the year - had been prompted by most of its customers buying plans over the phone or online.

    Holkham Hall has said sorry after gig-goers were forced to wait several hours in traffic while trying to get to Sir Tom Jones's concert.

    People said they had to queue for four hours due to traffic gridlock on Sunday, with many describing the situation as a "complete shambles" and "mayhem" on the venue's Facebook page, external.

    The estate issued a statement on the social media site and said it was "doing everything to ensure this situation will never happen again".

    The venue said it had hosted two big events that day - a country fair and the concert - and it had extra resources in place and a traffic plan.

    "Despite these measures being taken, we recognise there was a very high volume of traffic in the area and in Holkham Park causing problems and delays for drivers.

    "This was further compounded by a road traffic accident on the main access route to Holkham."
