    Climbing equipment at a children's play area in Corby has been destroyed by dogs, police have confirmed.

    Officers have increased patrols at the park on the Danesholme estate to prevent further damage. 

    The borough council has said it is working with police to catch those responsible.

    A working mother from Wollaston who visited the "jungle" camp in Calais, where tens of thousands of refugees live, is calling on the county council to accept more people fleeing the war in Syria.

    Georgina Hickman said she has seen "squalid conditions" in Calais first hand. Along with a group of friends she formed a charity called Helpful Humans, external to provide aid and support to the people living there.

    The county council, external said accepting more refugees would put additional stress on school places and the health service.

    Officials at County Hall say this would put additional strain on heath and education services.

    Elsewhere, children with dogs are being blamed for the destruction of a play area in Corby, where police have mounted a guard to prevent further damage.

    The seaside  came to Kettering in a heat wave - and proved a huge success with thousands flocking to a huge sandpit and splash fountain in the town centre.

    Lesley Thurland, the borough council, external's head of community and culture, said: "Once again Kettering by the Sea has been a fantastic event, drawing thousands of people into the town centre for fun in the sun. 

    "For the families who did not travel abroad for the season, this free community event has been the ideal way to spend the summer holiday and we are extremely grateful for everyone who helped make it a memorable summer."

    Two walkers have been injured after being knocked over by a herd of cows in Northamptonshire. 

    The Air Ambulance says it has flown a woman with severe chest trauma to hospital in Coventry. 

    There are no other details on the condition of the other walker at present.

    Network Rail is to spend £100m on laying a second track between Corby and Kettering as part of its upgrading programme for the Midland Main Line.

    Single track line

    The company, with East Midlands Trains, has mounted an exhibition at Corby Railway Station so passengers can find out more about the scheme. 

    From 10 September to 24 October, the line will be closed for strengthening and upgrade work on key bridges and viaducts with a bus services replacing trains.
