    After a mild start, cold weather will feed in during the course of the day.

    There'll be blustery showers, which could contain hail and thunder this afternoon, and also some sunny spells.

    A cold wind means temperatures will struggle to reach a maximum of 10C (50F).

  3. FA Cup: Brackley upset League One Gillingham in 4-3 thrillerpublished at 08:11 Greenwich Mean Time 17 November 2016

    James Armson hit a stunning hat-trick as National League North Brackley held off a Gillingham fightback to knock the League One side out of the FA Cup.

    Armson struck twice to put the hosts in control of a thrilling first-round replay, but close-range shots from Jake Hessenthaler and substitute Scott Wagstaff forced extra-time.

    An own goal by Gills goalkeeper Stuart Nelson made it 3-2 to the hosts, and Armson's 20-yard effort ensured the win despite a late Cody McDonald goal.

    Brackley will now have a trip to League Two Blackpool in the second round.

    We've heard about the consequences of the fire at Wicksteed Park, which has destroyed a 90-year-old boathouse.

    A man was seriously injured when his car hit an electricity pole carrying an 11,000-volt cable at Deanshanger.

    And archaeologists from Northampton have unearthed some amazing Anglo-Saxon tree trunk coffins in Norfolk.

    We've just heard that hundreds of homes in the Deanshanger and Wicken areas were without power this morning, after a car collided with an electricity pole carrying an 11,000-volt cable.

    Earlier today we mentioned the car crashed on the A422 near Deanshanger. The 29-year-old driver of the car is being treated for serious injuries at the John Radcliffe Infirmary in Oxford. 

    Western Power said 285 properties had power cuts, but most homes have now had their power reconnected.

  9. Northampton archaeologists uncover 'rare' Anglo-Saxon coffinspublished at 16:53 Greenwich Mean Time 16 November 2016

    Archaeologists based in Northampton have made an unusual discovery in north Norfolk.

    A team working for the Museum of London Archaeology Department, external has uncovered an Anglo-Saxon Christian cemetery, complete with 81 coffins made from hollowed-out tree trunks.

    The "previously unknown" early Christian Anglo-Saxon community's cemetery was found at Great Ryburgh.  

    Anglo-Saxon coffins seldom survive because wood decays over time.

    James Fairclough, who led the dig, said: "The combination of acidic sand and alkaline water created the perfect conditions for the skeletons and wooden graves to survive, revealing remarkable details of Christian Anglo-Saxon burial practices."

    A driver has been left with serious injuries after crashing his car into an electricity pole.

    It happened at 06:40 on the A422 near Deanshanger.

    The 29-year-old man from Milton Keynes was driving a silver Mercedes S430 from Deanshanger towards Buckingham. 

    He's been taken to John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford.

    But more wet weather is on the way. The Met Office says outbreaks of rain will reach all parts of Northamptonshire this afternoon and there will be gusty winds too.

    Tomorrow will have blustery showers which will be heavy, with hail and thunder. It'll feel raw in the cold, brisk winds, with a maximum temperature of 9C (48F).

    Children in Need

    Northampton's Community Law Service is one of 20 Northamptonshire charities to have benefited from Children in Need funding this year.

    The Community Law Service, external has received money to provide advice to parents of children diagnosed with disabilities and special needs.

    It says there is not enough support available for families, who often aren't aware of benefits they could receive.

    Northampton Town's on-loan midfielder JJ Hooper has returned to his parent club Port Vale after picking up an injury on Saturday.

    Northampton Saints' centre Luther Burrell says despite speculation linking him with Toulon, he's "not signing for them" and hasn't "spoken to them" either.

    The England international has told me he is happy to shut down any recent "whispers" surrounding a move to France.

    Saints are back in action on Friday travelling to Worcester in the Premiership.

  15. Wicksteed Park fire: Cause 'not suspicious'published at 12:38 Greenwich Mean Time 16 November 2016

    Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue officers say the cause of a fire in the boathouse at Wicksteed Park is not yet known, but is "not believed to be suspicious".

    Firefighters were called at about 19:30 yesterday. The Kettering crew was supported by those from Burton Latimer, Rothwell, Wellingborough and Moulton.

    Incident commander Mick Berry said: "The building involved was the 1920s boathouse, situated at the bottom of the park near the water chute, which is used predominantly for storage.

    "The fire quickly developed and as a precautionary measure we advised local residents to keep doors and windows closed due to the smoke plume and wind direction."

    The fire was under control within three hours.

    People are being advised to stay away from the boathouse for safety reasons.

    "There is no significant risk from smoke, but the structure is dangerous so people should stay away from the actual building," said Mr Berry.

    Kettering Sea Cadets, external says some of its equipment has been destroyed in the fire at Wicksteed Park's boathouse last night.

    Cpt Andy Barnwell, chairman of the cadets, said the 1920s boathouse was used to store sails, buoyancy aids, life jackets and other equipment.

    "The building has been completely gutted by the fire and everything inside destroyed," he said.

    "I understand that the majority of the equipment inside is covered on our insurance, albeit that we have a £1,000 excess to fund."

    The NHS in Northamptonshire says as many as one in four people turning up at Accident and Emergency departments could have cared for themselves or used alternative treatment.

    People are once again being urged to avoid going into A&E unless it's an emergency, as both Kettering and Northampton General hospitals are experiencing high demand.

    The chief operating officer at Northampton General, Deborah Needham, says too many people with minor ailments are attending.

  18. Wicksteed Park fire: Damaged boathouse was 90 years oldpublished at 10:11 Greenwich Mean Time 16 November 2016

    The Wicksteed Park boathouse, which was damaged by fire last night, dates from the 1920s.

    A spokesman for the park says it housed paddle-boats, canoes and other equipment associated with the lakeside attractions.

    Firefighters were called by a security guard who spotted smoke coming from the boathouse.

    A park spokesman said: "We are still working with the fire brigade to try and determine the cause and the area's been fenced-off for safety reasons.

    "We are currently assessing the extent of the damage to the equipment and building itself."

    Wicksteed says the incident will not affect the day-to-day running of the park during the winter months, as the lakeside attractions are closed for the winter.

    They hope to have them open again for the start of the new season in the spring.

    We've just heard from the fire service that crews are investigating the cause of the blaze at Wicksteed Park's boathouse, which was reported in the Northampton Chronicle and Echo, external this morning.

    Firefighters were called to the Kettering park just after 19:00 last night. 

    Four fire appliances tackled the blaze and people living nearby were advised to keep their windows closed as a precaution.

    Northampton is not the only area where new "public space protection orders" are looking to be enforced.

    In Kettering, the borough council there is also due make a final decision on similar orders, all relating to dogs.

    A range of measures to restrict dog walkers are being considered.

    The rules mean dogs would be banned from parts of some parks and must be kept on leads in other areas. 

    Perhaps most interestingly, if it's approved no-one will be able to walk more than six dogs at any one time. That seems plenty to me!
