  19. Petition to close shops on Boxing Day receives support and close to 110,000 signaturespublished at 14:24 Greenwich Mean Time 14 November 2016

  20. Boxing Day sales ban petition to go to Number 10, but government may not be receptivepublished at 14:21 Greenwich Mean Time 14 November 2016

The petition to end Boxing Day shopping, started by Kettering baker Ian Lapworth, comes at a time when retailers are reconsidering their Christmas sales strategies.

In previous years much touted Black Friday sales saw vast crowds and chaos in some stores. The day was more muted last year, as companies toned down their sales pitches.

But retailers still want to make the most out of shoppers' enthusiasm for a bargain.

    Black Friday

Mr Lapworth plans to send his petition to Prime Minister Theresa May, but commenting on a similar petition last year the government said: "We do not believe it is for central government to tell businesses how to run their shops or how best to serve their customers. Therefore we are not proposing to ban shops from opening on Boxing Day."
