  5. Special sgt's actions were 'entirely unacceptable'published at 17:23 British Summer Time 18 April 2017

The Northamptonshire Police misconduct hearing was told that Special Sgt Alec Bedford's actions of pushing and shouting at an 87-year-old woman happened when he was trying to arrest her 90-year-old husband.

The man was being arrested in July 2015 on suspicion of threatening behaviour towards a neighbour and of pulling his wife by the hair two weeks earlier.

The woman was moved across the room and pushed her into a chair, during which time she scratched Special Sgt Bedford's arm.

The husband was taken to Daventry Police Station, while his wife was arrested and given bail without being taken into custody.

David Ring, the police force's solicitor, said the sergeant had "behaved unprofessionally by laughing at the content" of the video footage he showed to colleagues later.

He said it was a "breach of confidence" which "harmed the reputation of Northamptonshire Police".

Sgt Bedford pleaded guilty to charges relating to the use of excessive force, failing to act with courtesy and deliberately breaching confidentiality.

The misconduct hearing agreed with the Police Federation representative who argued it amounted to misconduct, but not gross misconduct.

The independent chairman of the police panel, Geoffrey Payne said: "This was a deeply disturbing, and entirely unacceptable matter."

  10. Labour can put 'people on the ground'published at 15:47 British Summer Time 18 April 2017

Labour lost its only Northamptonshire seat - Corby - with Andy Sawford's defeat in the general election on 2015.

The Labour leader of Corby Borough Council, Tom Beattie, said the prime minister's decision to have another one is not so surprising: "Not to have your own mandate, as Theresa May didn't have, was always likely to be a difficulty for her.

"Brexit and the triggering of Article 50 have played to the idea that she perhaps wants or is seeking a more comfortable Commons majority than she now enjoys.

"Labour has got he people to put on the ground, and that's what we'll do.

"Now is the time [for Labour] to come together and unity is important - it's less a matter of Jeremy Corbyn's leadership and more a matter of what the Labour Party can do."

The Conservatives have a working majority of 17 seats, external heading into this general election.

  11. Police sgt 'loud and laughing' as he showed video of shoving elderly womanpublished at 15:23 British Summer Time 18 April 2017

The police misconduct hearing heard that a sergeant with the special constabulary was "being loud and laughing" when he showed video footage of himself pushing and shouting at an 87-year-old woman.

Sgt Alec Bedford did not attend the Northamptonshire Police hearing where he was found guilty of misconduct, but not gross misconduct.

He has been given a final written warning, whereas he could have been sacked if he was found guilty of the more serious charge.

The incident took place at the home of the woman and her 90-year-old husband in the Daventry area on 8 July 2015.

The hearing was told Sgt Bedford showed footage from his body-worn camera to colleagues on two occasions later that month.

  18. Why is Bright Food selling Weetabix, and why is Post Holdings buying?published at 11:07 British Summer Time 18 April 2017

    Weetabix in a bowl

Brokerage Hargreaves Lansdown offers this explanation for the sale of the iconic breakfast brand, pointing out it comes hot on the heels of Kraft Heinz’s bid for Unilever and 21st Century Fox’s approach for Sky.

    Quote Message

Weetabix has struggled to crack the Chinese market, so it is no surprise to see Bright Food selling up. It’s also unsurprising to see one of the UK’s biggest cereal brands remain in foreign ownership, due to the pound’s weakness. UK-listed Associated British Foods was rumoured to have been interested in a deal, but any domestic buyers would have had to overcome the headwind of the pound’s reduced buying power. In contrast, the dollar’s recent strength has helped the successful bidder, US consumer group Post Holdings.
