  6. MPs don't need to wear ties, says Speakerpublished at 16:26 British Summer Time 29 June 2017

Wellingborough MP Peter Bone was involved in a bit of Westminster history earlier.

A long standing sartorial convention means that male members of the House of Commons must wear both a jacket and tie.

But when Mr Bone asked Commons Speaker and Buckingham MP John Bercow why Liberal Democrat Tom Brake was allowed to speak despite lacking the appropriate neckwear, the answer came as something of a surprise.

In response, Mr Bercow said: "Am I minded not to call a member simply because that member is not wearing a tie? No."

So there you have it - no more need for your MP to wear a tie in the Commons.

...they'll be going to work in shorts on hot days next.

  7. 'Northants drop Cosgrove twice'published at 15:33 British Summer Time 29 June 2017

    Northants 261 & 289-7 dec v Leicestershire 157 & 124-2 (target 394)

    Alex Winter
    BBC Radio Northampton sport

Northants were frustrated last night, not taking a wicket in 16 overs they had under the floodlights and they continue to be a little frustrated on day four.

They did strike twice within the first seven overs to remove both openers but have since dropped Mark Cosgrove twice - both pretty straightforward chances - and Colin Ackerman is providing rather stubborn resistance.

Northants are still favourites to go and win this game but it's set to be hard work and a special Cosgrove innings could give Leicestershire a sniff.

Another cloudy day here and a little bit of movement with the pink ball but interestingly, the ball was changed just after the 30 over mark, exactly as it was yesterday afternoon.

    Northamptonshire County Council chambers

"While the council has now put in place three of my four recommendations, and is working on providing the fourth, I am disappointed this only took place after further intervention from me."

The Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman’s role is to handle and remedy complaints, and to share learning from investigations to improve local public, and adult social care, services.

In a statement, the council said: "We would like to offer a full and frank apology to the family for the way in which their case has been handled, and to the ombudsman.

"We are now in the process of implementing all of the recommendations set out by the ombudsman and these will be fully complete within the timescale set out."

The council will also pay the daughter £150 and the mother £250 in recognition of its failure to provide a timely remedy.

"This is on top of a total of £4,000 in compensation that the family were awarded last year."

  12. Council displayed 'scant respect' for family, says ombudsmanpublished at 10:51 British Summer Time 29 June 2017

    Sam Read
    BBC Radio Northampton politics reporter

Northamptonshire County Council has been criticised for failing to apologise to a young woman with learning difficulties it had let down.

In a second criticism in less than a year, external, the Local Government Ombudsman said the authority showed "scant respect" for the family.

The young person, known as Miss D, had learning difficulties and was disruptive on school transport. Last year the ombudsman said the council had failed to help find new transport - leaving the woman without schooling for six months.

The authority also failed to organise home and respite care.

The council says it apologises and is now implementing the recommendations.
