5USport now owns a 60% stake at the club, but it's being described as a "partnership" and not a "takeover".

  3. So, who controls Northampton Town now?published at 16:12 British Summer Time 26 June 2017

    David Keller
    BBC News

Confused by Northampton Town's announcement this morning? We were for a time too, but here's a brief explainer...

Essentially, a Chinese sports development and education firm has agreed to purchase a 60% stake in Northampton Town.

Guangzhou-based 5USport now has a stake in the holding company which owns the majority shareholding in the Cobblers.

However, Northampton chairman Kelvin Thomas insisted it was not a takeover and added that he and 5USport would be working as "partners".

Thomas also said there would be no change to the overall structure of the League One club.

But there would be investment in the playing budget for boss Justin Edinburgh, as well as the East Stand and "other development areas".

Thomas told BBC Radio Northampton: "They do have the majority share. You could call it investment or you can call it a takeover. I wouldn't necessarily understand the difference.

"A takeover would tend to mean 5USport were coming in to take over, but they're not. We're working as partners and the structure of the club will stay the same, I'm staying on as chairman and the directors are staying."

    Hopefully that's a little clearer...

"I'm sorry to say that this is yet another incident which is occurring on the A605 and I'm afraid we've had too many in recent weeks and before," said Mr Vara.

"One thing that is absolutely clear is that the present situation is not satisfactory.

"Sadly, the record of this particular location is such that we will probably continue to have accidents."

  12. Chinese company purchases major stake in Northampton Townpublished at 12:10 British Summer Time 26 June 2017

    Graham McKechnie
    BBC Radio Northampton sport

As we've just mentioned, Northampton Town Football Club has announced a major investment from a Chinese Sports Development and Education company, 5USport.

It's described as a partnership - part of the club's "overall investment strategy".

5USport has agreed to buy a major stake in Northampton Town Ventures Limited - the company that owns the majority shareholding in the football club.

Cobblers chairman Kelvin Thomas said it agreed to increase the playing budget and that money would also be invested in the development of the East Stand.

There will be no change in staffing, including keeping Thomas on as chairman, according to 5USport chief executive Tom Auyeung.

Cobblers chairman Kelvin Thomas said there would be no change to the structure of the club, but there would be investment in the playing budget as well as the East Stand and "other development areas".

Chief executive of 5USport, Tom Auyeung, said: "We have been looking at partnering with an English football club for about 18 months now.

"We have looked closely at others, but none ticked as many boxes for us as Northampton Town."

Thomas completed his takeover of the Cobblers from David Cardoza in November 2015. Since then the club has won promotion to League One and moved closer to restarting work on the unfinished East Stand.

"What we really liked about 5USport was their vision and intention, so we are very pleased to be able to form this partnership," said Thomas. "5USport want to invest in all the areas of the club on a sensible basis, but with a long-term view.

"This is not a short-term investment for them and we felt that was really positive for the club."

  16. Police investigate cars racing near Daventry International Rail Freight Terminalpublished at 11:19 British Summer Time 26 June 2017

    Martin Heath
    BBC Radio Northampton

There have been reports of the roads around Daventry International Rail Freight Terminal being used as a racetrack.

We've been told the races happened regularly during weekend evenings, but it was thought they'd died down.

However, a week ago police were called out to more reports of racing between the roundabouts on the site.

    DIRFTImage source, Google

Apparently attracted by announcements on social media, a large crowd reportedly gathered to watch about 50 cars competing and performing stunts.

"We're trying to clamp down on it as much as we possibly can," said PC Chris Gray.

"The impact it has on the community and other drivers is quite substantial. The potential for serious and fatal collisions - it's a public road, we don't know what is round the corner - is quite high."

Night shift workers at the nearby logistics hubs told us when they approached participants in the past they'd been aggressive. They said when the police turned up, the drivers and spectators dispersed but later returned.

Police have appealed for any witnesses to the incidents to come forward.

Two people were killed in a crash in early May, with a third death on the road just five days later.

  18. Hamilton calls Vettel 'a disgrace' after Azerbaijan GP collisionpublished at 10:11 British Summer Time 26 June 2017

    BBC Sport

Lewis Hamilton called title rival Sebastian Vettel "a disgrace" after the Ferrari driver drove into his car in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku.

The two clashed before one of three restarts in a chaotic race - Vettel hitting the back of Hamilton's Mercedes and then swerving sideways into him.

Vettel said Hamilton had deliberately slowed - or "brake-tested" - him.

The Briton denied that and said Vettel's driving was "disgusting" and "not sportsman's conduct".

Vettel, of Germany, was given a 10-second stop-and-go penalty in the race - won by Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo - after being found guilty of dangerous driving, but still finished a place ahead of Hamilton in fourth, extending his championship lead to 14 points.

Valtteri Bottas, Hamiton's team-mate at Brackley-based Mercedes, finished second ahead of the Williams of Canadian Lance Stroll.
