  4. Police warn about 'assumptions' after senior council staff questioned under caution over Cobblers loanpublished at 14:55 British Summer Time 27 June 2017

Northamptonshire Police says "no assumptions" should be made after it emerged the chief executive and borough solicitor at Northampton Borough Council were interviewed under caution over the loan to the town's football club.

Much of the £10.25m lent to the Cobblers in 2013 remains unaccounted for and Sixfields' East Stand is still only half built.

In a statement, Northamptonshire Police said: "[We] are independently collecting evidence and investigating a wide range of matters concerning the grant, use and loss of Northampton Borough Council public funds‎.

"This search for the truth includes both making arrests and interviewing a wide range of individuals across many organisations.

"It should be noted that these interviews include both potential witnesses and suspects, and no assumptions should be drawn at this stage."

Northampton Borough Council says the police investigation means it is unable to comment.

  5. 'Conditions in Northants' favour'published at 14:51 British Summer Time 27 June 2017

    Northants 261 v Leicestershire 75-7

    Alex Winter
    BBC Radio Northampton sport

Despite a disastrous weather forecast play got underway at Wantage Road on time for day two and Northamptonshire have made a perfect start.

In the first 33 deliveries, they didn't conceded a single run and took three wickets. Suddenly the follow-on is in the picture. Leicestershire are desperate for a partnership.

Conditions are firmly in Northants' favour. They had a new ball to use under the lights last night and today there is a thick low layer of cloud helping the ball to swing around.

A side note, the crowd today is below the level of even an ordinary day of Championship cricket - but that's probably to do with the very poor forecast.

The chief executive and borough solicitor at Northampton Borough Council have been interviewed by detectives investigating a loan to Northampton Town Football Club.

£10.25m of the money lent to the club in 2013 remains unaccounted for and the club's East stand remains half built.

The BBC has learned chief executive David Kennedy and borough solicitor Francis Fernandes were questioned under caution by detectives from Northamptonshire Police.

The police launched their criminal investigation into "alleged financial irregularities" relating to the disappearance of the money 20 months ago.

There has only been one arrest to date – the club's former chairman David Cardoza, who is currently on police bail.

Northampton Borough Council says it can't comment due to the ongoing police investigation.

After a cloudy start it's expected the rain will become heavier and more frequent as the afternoon continues.

As we reported on Monday, an auditors report has stated that Northampton Borough Council has "not had any success" in recovering the £10.22m loaned to Northampton Town Football Club.

That's despite the authority spending up to £950,000 trying to recover the money they loaned the club to redevelop their Sixfields Stadium.

A report to a borough council meeting, which takes place tonight, says the council has "spent or committed a large proportion" of that total, but has "not had any success" in recovering the money.

The council has not said exactly how much of the £950,000 has been spent so far, citing "commercial sensitivity".

    Graham McKechnie
    BBC Radio Northampton sport

Northants just about came out on top on the first day of day-night County Championship cricket at Wantage Road.

Ben Duckett made a very welcome return to his best form, making 112 yesterday off 102 balls and joining the elite group of county batsmen who've scored a century before lunch (even though in this case it came before tea-time).

"It was a bit more like an innings I played last year," said Duckett.

    County Ground

"I tried to be a positive as I can, tried to get off to a good start, and just continued from there."

Max Holden was also in the runs, making 92. But Northants collapsed from 211 for 3 to 261 all out.

In reply Leicestershire lost wickets too - they're 65-4 when they resume this afternoon at 14:00.
