  2. Dunkirk disruption: Two teenagers chargedpublished at 11:24 British Summer Time 7 April 2017

    Two 16-year-old boys have been charged over an incident which saw a residential street in Dunkirk closed for several hours on Wednesday.

    Police were called to Cloister Street at about 08:00 following reports of two people on the roofs of houses.

    A cordon was put up and several residents were evacuated from their homes as a safety precaution.

    The boys have been charged with burglary, affray and criminal damage among other offences and are due to appear at Nottingham Magistrates' Court later.

    They cannot be named due to their age.

    Police officers have begun arriving at Leicester Cathedral for the funeral of PC Austin Jackson... 

    The 38-year-old died suddenly while on duty on 16 March.

    The service will start at 11:00.

    A group of anti-fracking campaigners is protesting outside a drilling firm in Chesterfield.

    Twelve members of Reclaim The Power have been blockading the main entrance to PR Marriott since early this morning and have hung a banner from a drilling rig.

    The group says it's targeted the firm because of its links with fracking company Cuadrilla.

    We have requested a comment from PR Marriott and are awaiting a response.

    Leicester Riders v Sheffield Sharks (19:30 BST)

    British Basketball returns to the BBC this evening with a top of the table clash.

    Leicester Riders currently sit top of the BBL, eight points ahead of the chasing pack and are favourites for the BBL Championship. 

    Their opponents Sheffield Sharks are well placed for a play-off place, currently sitting in fourth place. The Riders won a double header last weekend, beating Plymouth Raiders 88-71 on Saturday followed by a 85-71 victory over Surrey Scorchers on the Sunday.

    Last time out the Sharks lost 55-84 to Glasgow Rocks.

  6. Military intervention in Syria a 'matter for debate'published at 10:42 British Summer Time 7 April 2017

    The MP for Gedling has commented on Donald Trump's decision to carry out a missile strike on an airfield in western Syria. 

    The US president ordered the strikes following a chemical attack.

    The MP and shadow defence secretary Vernon Coaker said: "I think the use of chemical weapons is a barbarous act and you can't just stand by and watch those things happen. 

    "Whether military intervention in those circumstances is the right option - that's a matter for debate."

    A 40-year-old woman who was arrested on suspicion of abduction has been released on police bail.

    Samantha Baldwin and her two sons were found yesterday after a Europe-wide hunt involving more than 100 officers.

    They had been missing since 27 March

    Two other women - a 62-year-old and a 36-year-old - remain on police bail.

  10. Cricket: Foxes to start County Championship with 16 point deduction published at 10:07 British Summer Time 7 April 2017

    Leicestershire will start with a 16 point deduction in the new County Championship season. 

    The Foxes have also been fined £5,000 after bowler Charlie Shreck was found to have used language deemed to be obscene, offensive or insulting in a warm-up game. Leicestershire have suspended Shreck for two games.

    Captain Mark Cosgrove has also received a one match ban, effective in the third game of the season.

    Five shops on King Street and New Walk in Leicester were broken into over night - Riddhi’s Convenience, The Bakery, Pizza Express, Barrie Stephens and Bread and Honey.

    The BBC has spoken to hairdresser Barrie Stephen who said he's had "nothing but problems" since the old council building was demolished two years ago.

    He said: "This is the fourth time in 18 months we've had things stolen and our salon raided. This area is really getting bad."

    He said the preservation order on the building means they cannot put bars on the windows to protect their property. He's calling for more police patrols and better street lighting.

    The Bakery has had its windows smashed - a worker has told the BBC the same thing happened last week when thieves broke in and stole a charity box and empty till tray.

    She said the owner will now have to replace the broken window again.

    Leicestershire Police have confirmed they are investigating and have arrested a 31-year-old man on suspicion of burglary.

    Police have released CCTV footage of a man they want to speak to after a car had one of its tyres damaged in East Leake in Nottinghamshire.

    The vehicle was parked in Cosby Street when it was attacked at about 23:30 on 13 December. Call 101 if you can help.

    Sarah McLeod, chief executive of The Arkwright Society, said it was a "phenomenal achievement" for Building 17 at Cromford Mills to win the EU Prize for Cultural Heritage, external .

    She said: “This award is acknowledged as Europe’s top honour in the heritage field and we are proud to take our place amongst the 28 other projects from 18 countries across Europe.

    “Being at the heart of the Industrial Revolution, Building 17 is one of the most culturally important buildings in the UK.

    "It will continue the sense of entrepreneurialism, innovation and creativity that characterised Arkwright’s mills.”

    The only other UK winner was Samphire, a maritime heritage project in west Scotland.

    When you ring 999 it's in a real emergency - right? Not for everyone.

    In March alone East Midlands Ambulance Service received 6,000 calls that wouldn't be classed as "life-threatening".

    These includes calls about dandruff, blisters and a even a poorly cat...

    The ambulance service is now trying to raise awareness of the inappropriate calls - from 14:00 today they will be live tweeting from the control room about the 999 calls they receive.

    A 60-year-old woman suffered hand injuries and her dog needed vet treatment after they were attacked by three dogs in Burton, external .

    The woman was injured when she tried to protect her pet after the three dogs, thought to be Staffordshire Bull Terriers, began attacking it in Bluestone Lane on 16 March.

    Police said the owner of the three dogs was white, about 6ft 3in tall and with an athletic build.
