  17. 'Nightmare' gridlock caused by roadworkspublished at 12:28 British Summer Time 19 April 2017

    Amy Woodfield
    BBC Local Live

You might have noticed new roadworks under way on the M1 in the East Midlands -  the road is being upgraded to a smart motorway between J23a and J25.

Well two weeks in and it seems this is already causing problems for one local business.

    Traffic on M1

Medstrom in Castle Donnington delivers specialist beds for seriously ill hospital patients in Leicester and Nottingham.

Jane McLaughlin from the company has said the roadworks are causing "intolerable" delays and that the rush hour gridlock around J23a is a "nightmare" for them.

It seems as though the traffic is being made worse by a diversion directing traffic off the M1 at J23a and onto the A453 where there are also roadworks.

    Traffic

It looks like delays could continue for a long time yet though - work isn't expected to complete until winter 2018.

Highways England has said they are "improving" the road and the project will make journeys "faster and more reliable".
