    The water feature at Nottingham's Old Market Square has been turned off because of the cold weather today.

    Temperatures mean its internal thermostat has kicked in, stopping spray from the fountain forming ice on the pavement.

    Nottingham City Council said one part of the fountain will be switched off tomorrow for some maintenance on a drain.

    Depending on the temperatures, the rest of the water feature is expected to be on.

    In his letter chief inspector Peter Clarke told justice secretary David Gauke there would be "further tragedies" unless safety measures were put in place at Nottingham Prison.

    Mr Clarke said: "The principal reason I have decided to issue an urgent notification…is because for the third time in a row HMI Prisons has found the prison to be fundamentally unsafe."

    Nottingham Prison currently holds about 1,000 men. More than two-thirds of prisoners said they'd felt unsafe in the jail at some time.

    Eight inmates are believed to have taken their own lives in the last two years.

    The Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings for snow and ice for much of the East Midlands.

    There will be a mixture of rain and sleet falling at lower levels causing icy patches through this evening and into the morning.

    This evening will also see some isolated wintry showers with clear spells at times.

    It will be cold with the risk of icy patches forming and lows of -1C (30F).

    The justice secretary, David Gauke, has been ordered to make immediate improvements to Nottingham Prison after he was warned the jail was "fundamentally unsafe" and in a "dangerous state".

    Peter Clarke, the chief inspector of Prisons for England and Wales, issued Mr Gauke with an "urgent notification letter" demanding action within 28 days.

    It's the first time the "urgent notification" process has been used since it was established last November.

    Eight prisoners at Nottingham jail are believed to have taken their own lives in the last two years and levels of self-harm have risen significantly.

    A man who died after falling ill shortly after being arrested by police in Chesterfield has been named by the police watchdog.

    Shaun Aherne, 42, was arrested in Pleasley during a reported domestic incident on 7 January. He became unwell at a custody suite in Chesterfield and died in hospital three days later.

    The Independent Office for Police Conduct has started an investigation into Derbyshire Constabulary's dealings with Mr Aherne before he fell ill.

    British Transport Police have issued a further appeal for information about last week's fire at Nottingham railway station.

    Officers are trying to gather mobile phone or dashcam footage taken in or around the concourse either before, during or after the blaze.

    The force said the fire, which was discovered in the ladies' toilets on the southern concourse just after 06:15 on Friday, has resulted in damages and financial losses that could run into the millions.

    A motorhome and bikes have been stolen during four ram raids.

    Officers are linking three raids in Calverton and one in Sherwood where a silver transit van was used to gain entry into businesses.

    Nottinghamshire Police , externalsaid the van reversed into three separate units in Park Road in Calverton at about 05:30 on Monday.

    A motorhome, motorbikes and a distinctive specialist race bike (pictured) were stolen.

    A cross bike was also taken when a van rammed into a workshop in Mansfield Street in Sherwood at about 19:20 on Sunday.

    Police said three men were seen in the van, who were wearing dark clothing.

    Drivers have been warned a number of huge brewery vessels are to be transported from Swadlincote to the M1 via Burton and Derby on Tuesday night.

    The water supply at Nottingham railway station has been reconnected following a major blaze there last Friday.

    The fire burned for 12 hours after a new section of the station caught fire.

    East Midlands Trains said it was working with suppliers to "reopen all food outlets, ensure toilet facilities are fully operational and that drinking water and washing facilities are usable for customers".

    Portable toilets will remain on site while this work takes place.

    Derbyshire County Council has disputed a new study that suggested it was one of the three worst authorities in the country for the quality of its care homes.

    Consumer group Which? analysed results of Care Quality Commission inspections and said half of the council's care homes were rated as inadequate or requiring improvement.

    Jean Wharmby, cabinet member for adult care, accused Which? of using out-of-date information that did not reflect the current situation.

    She said: "Eight of our 22 homes are rated as requiring improvement. We have no homes that are rated as inadequate.

    “There is a huge difference between an overall rating of requires improvement – which may relate to failing to keep paperwork up to date and not be a reflection on the quality of care provided to residents - and inadequate, which usually relates to significant concerns about the quality of care offered."

    CCTV footage has been released of a man police want to speak to in connection with a burglary at a house in Wollaton.

    Nottinghamshire Police said, external officers were following several lines of enquiry but they have been "unsuccessful in identifying the man".

    The burglary happened in Hawton Crescent at about 20:30 on 29 October but the footage has only just been released.

    It's hoped a service - which helps people who are drunk or suffer minor injuries on a night out - can become permanent.

    Police and paramedics have been using a dedicated vehicle parked in Leicester city centre since before Christmas and helped 200 people over the festive period.

    The trial's been extended to the end of March and the city council says it's looking at how to continue funding it.
