    The leader of Nottinghamshire County Council has issued an apology to the victims of historical child sex abuse.

    It comes after councillors approved the independent inquiry into child sexual abuse report, external at today's full council meeting.

    In part of her speech, councillor Kay Cutts, said: "One of the greatest duties that can be bestowed on a person or an institution is the responsibility for the safety and upbringing of another's child.

    "This is not something that we at Nottinghamshire County Council treat lightly."

    The inquiry will look at 13 investigations across a wide range of institutions including local authorities.

    It will identify failings, demand for accountability for these past failings as well as support victims to share their experience of sexual abuse.

    In 2016 former social worker Andris Logins was jailed for 20 years after sexually abusing children at a care home where he worked in the 1980s.

  8. Half of council-run care homes 'need improvement'published at 11:31 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January 2018

    Half of the care homes operated by Derbyshire County Council are either "inadequate" or "require improvement", according to figures, external from the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

    Analysis of the CQC results, by the consumer group Which?, showed some of the 54 care providers that operate at least 12 homes in England had half or more of their premises classed as failing by the regulator.

    The analysis put Derbyshire County Council in the bottom three with 10 failings homes out of 20.

    Elderly Care

    The county council is expected to discuss the report at its cabinet meeting today.

    Deputy Leader Simon Spencer said: "If there is an issue, we'll have to look at it very carefully and take immediate action."

    It has just been revealed the whole of the NHS system in the Greater Nottingham area has gone on to the highest state of alert because of winter pressures.

    The status, known as Opel 4, is triggered when hospitals, GPs and other primary care services are experiencing huge demand.

    The latest figures from NHS England show the number of ambulance handover delays has reduced.

    Police officers boarded a train at Market Harborough railway station yesterday following reports a passenger and crew member had been assaulted.

    British Transport Police said there had been no arrests over the trouble, which happened at about 17:11.

    In a statement, the force said: "We were called to Market Harborough station following reports of an incident on board a train.

    "Officers attended the station and are currently investigating an allegation of an assault on a passenger and a member of train staff.

    A school in Barrow Upon Soar has closed for the day after a tree fell over near its entrance in high winds, taking a lamppost with it.

    Jill Walton, headteacher of Humphrey Perkins School, said pupils walking to school were being put at risk by cars having to turn round in the road.

    She said: "It quickly became clear we weren't able to guarantee the health and safety of our pupils."

    The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for snow and ice, external in Derbyshire for between 11:00 today and 23:55 tomorrow.

    Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire's air ambulance is to start operating 24 hours a day.

    At the moment, crews only respond to medical emergencies between 07:00 and 19:00.

    The charity says it will increase the annual running costs from £2.5m to £4m.

    But the charity says its confident it will be able to raise the money needed.
