The senior officer in the Hannah Cobley murder investigation said that a baby girl was "denied her life" after her mother "took actions into her own hands."

Speaking outside the court Det Insp Jonathan Blockley said it had been an "extremely sad and tragic case" for their officers to investigate and the family involved.

He said: "Cobley could have sought help from her own family or professionals but instead took actions into her own hands.

"This decision meant a newborn baby girl was denied her life."

Sentencing Hannah Cobley to life with a minimum term of 18 years, Justice Susan Carr said the 29-year-old had carried out a "brutal assault on the baby" and it was "inconceivable" she had not thought about protecting the life of the "defenceless newborn".

She said there was no diagnosis of mental illness or abnormalities and described Cobley's actions as "entirely selfish and what suited her lifestyle".

Prior to sentencing, the prosecution had described Cobley's crime as "a planned killing intended to conceal the fact of the pregnancy and the existence of the baby".

In mitigation, Cobley's defence solicitor said it had been "an extremely serious case but a spontaneous one" and suggested she had the potential for rehabilitation.

Cobley, who had denied murder and claimed the child was stillborn, cried throughout sentencing.
