  1. Did photographer snap ultra-rare black bumblebee?published at 11:19 British Summer Time 6 June 2019

    BBC News

An insect expert says a black bee spotted in a Derbyshire garden may not be as rare as initially thought.

The unusual-looking bee was spotted and photographed in Stanley Common by Colin Tomlinson, who told BBC Radio Derby a lengthy internet search had led him to conclude it was a rare black bumblebee, similar to one spotted in Oxfordshire in 2013.

However, Karim Vahed, professor of entomology at the University of Derby, said after taking a close look at the photo he didn't think that was the case.

He said: "At first I thought it could be the very rare black variety of the Ruderal bumblebee, which has declined by about 70% over the past 40 years.

"Unfortunately, on closer inspection, I don't actually think it's a bumblebee at all. I believe it's a hairy-footed flower bee. It's fairly common in the south but actually there aren't many records of it this far north."

Mr Tomlinson said he still thought it was a black bumblebee.

  3. Notts first-innings inquest on holdpublished at 10:59 British Summer Time 6 June 2019

    Warwickshire 391-9 dec, Nottinghamshire 97 & 116-1 (match resumes 11:00)

Nottinghamshire head coach Peter Moores says the inquest on what went wrong in their first innings at Edgbaston yesterday can wait until this game is over.

After being bowled out for 97- the lowest score by any team in the County Championship this season - Notts fared better in their second innings to encourage hopes that they might yet save this game.

"Credit to Ben Duckett and Chris Nash," he told BBC Radio Nottingham: "They played well in the last session.

"As for the first innings, we will have to address at the end of the game. At the moment we have just got to address what's in front of us and that is to try and come out of the game with a draw.

"Jeetan Patel is a good bowler and it is a surface we knew was going to deteriorate but it's still a good enough pitch to bat on. We have seen that the way the lads have batted in the second innings. It's very frustrating that it didn't happen in the first innings."

  4. Foxes not following the sunpublished at 10:45 British Summer Time 6 June 2019

    Lancashire 449, Leicestershire 288 & 5-1 (match resumes 11:00)

Leicestershire's Mark Cosgrove says one of the things holding back the Foxes has been the generally poor early summer weather. And it has not been at its best for them again in Liverpool this week.

"It's been tough this season," the Australian told BBC Radio Leicester. "It feels like we've never seen the sun. As soon as we get our pads on the lights come on and the clouds come in."

Cosgrove hit a season's best 70 against Lancashire at Aigburth which, aided by 87 from South African Dieter Klein and 37 apiece from debutant wicketkeeper Harry Swindells and Callum Parkinson, came within 12 runs of saving the follow-on.

But the Foxes, 5-1 overnight for the loss of nightwatchman Chris Wright, still believe they can save the game.

"We're really disappointed not to avoid the follow-on because the boys at the lower end batted so well," said Cosgrove.

"It's a pretty nice wicket - you might get the odd one jump up at you or keep low but most of those are every half hour or so and it's not one of those pitches that's a minefield. We showed there are no demons and that we can bat really well and deep. You never know - if we bat well in those first two session we might even get a little lead and you never know where that could take us at the back of the game."

  5. Jury sent out at baby murder trialpublished at 10:32 British Summer Time 6 June 2019

    Sandish Shoker
    BBC News

The jury has been sent out at the trial of Hannah Cobley, who has denied murdering her newborn baby.

Justice Susan Carr at Leicester Crown Court told the panel of seven men and five women they must reach a unanimous verdict.

She told them they had three possible options: guilty of murder, not guilty of murder but guilty of manslaughter or not guilty.

"You must ask, are you sure the defendant intended to kill or cause really serious harm?" she said.

During the five-week trial, prosecutors alleged the 29-year-old placed the baby in a carrier bag after secretly giving birth to her in an outside toilet and then left it in an overgrown area on the farm in Stoney Stanton where she lived with her parents.

She told the court she didn't know if the newborn was alive when she put her in a carrier bag and doesn't know why she didn't tell anyone.

    Local Democracy Reporting Service

Nearly 50 trees are to be cut down to make way for a new housing development in Etwall.

Plans for nine detached homes off Slade Close were approved by South Derbyshire District Council earlier this week despite dozens of objections from local residents.

Developers will remove 46 trees - mostly conifers - but the majority of trees subject to Tree Preservation Orders at the site will remain and a new hedgerow will be added.

Tim Bilby, speaking on behalf of the objecting residents, branded the new development "an intrusion".

Planning officer Chris Nash said many of the trees being removed were not of suitable quality to justify keeping.

  13. Queen shares joke with D-Day veteranpublished at 18:04 British Summer Time 5 June 2019

    Press Association

The Queen jokingly told a D-Day veteran he did not have to remind her about the horrors of the liberation of Europe - as she was from his generation.

After attending the commemorations marking the 75th anniversary of the Allied campaign, the mood lightened when the Queen met a small group of elderly ex-servicemen and women who were all involved with Normandy landings.

She chatted to former Royal Marine Jack Smith, 94, a landing craft coxswain who was part of the first wave during D-Day.

He spent almost three months at the Normandy beaches ferrying the injured, munitions and other cargo, sleeping on his vessel under a tarpaulin sheet and was regularly strafed with bullets by Nazi planes.

When the veteran told the Queen how bad things were on D-Day she replied: "You don't have to tell me - I'm from the same generation," his son-in-law Stanley Marlow told reporters.

The ex-servicemen, from Barwell, Leicestershire, then teased the Queen, who is 93, by saying "I'm older than you."

After chatting with the monarch Mr Smith said: "It was a thrill meeting the Queen, she's marvellous and a real good egg."
