    A D-Day veteran from Nottingham is taking part in national commemorations to mark the 75th anniversary of the Normandy landings.

    In 1944, Ron Lamboll was with a special unit of the Royal Engineers, tasked with taking, printing and sending back reconnaissance photos from behind enemy lines.

    Now aged 98, the Royal British Legion is taking him, along with other veterans, back to the beaches at Normandy to remember all those who fought there.

    Mr Lamboll, from West Bridgford, said he was looking forward to marking the anniversary.

    Robert Purver, 94, from Derbyshire, also played a major role in the campaign, fighting alongside the Canadian Army to capture Juno beach in June 1944.

    He said: "My heart was in my mouth. I was scared to death. But there was no way of going home and you just had to get on with it.

    "You just had to hope upon hope that you reached the top of the beach without getting shot or blown up.

    "When I look back I cannot believe some of the things we endured. It's never left me."

    Derby College said students have been late for their GCSE exams because of major roadworks in the city.

    A handful arrived so late it's uncertain if their exam papers will be accepted by the exam boards, the college said.

    One student, who lives in Nottingham, didn't arrive for their exam until after it had finished. Slip roads on the A52 on to Wyvern Way closed on Monday.

    The college's head of exams, Tony McIlroy, said: "Our college generally finishes in the beginning to the middle of July.

    "That, from our perspective, would have been a far better time to put these works in place."

    Matthew Holmes, deputy leader of Derby City Council, said: "Any works on the A52, let alone a major project like this, is going to cause disruption.

    "We’re doing what we can to mitigate but it’s difficult to hear that students are missing exams."

    A man who was hit by a train died at the scene yesterday evening.

    Police were called at about 17:30 yesterday to the railway line near Syston, Leicestershire.

    A spokesman for British Transport Police said: "Colleagues from the ambulance service attended and a man was pronounced dead at the scene."

    His death is not being treated as suspicious and a file is to be prepared for the coroner.

    The newly elected leader of Change UK, Anna Soubry, has said she is "deeply disappointed" after six MPs left the party.

    The Broxtowe MP said: "Now is not the time to walk away, but instead to roll up our sleeves and stand up for the sensible mainstream centre ground which is unrepresented in British politics today."

    She added that the party was "as determined to fix Britain's broken politics as we were when we left our former parties".

    An inquest into the death of an inmate heard he set fire to his cell two months before he was found hanged.

    The jury at Nottingham Coroner's Court was shown bodycam footage from a prison officer on the day Shane Stoughton, 29, set fire to a towel.

    On the video he told officers he had wanted to die and added: "I just don't want to be here." Mr Stoughton was found dead in Nottingham Prison in September 2017.

    Mr Stoughton, from Kirkby in Ashfield had been handed an indeterminate sentence in 2007 for assault and was released from Stocken prison in Rutland in June 2017.

    Three weeks later he returned to jail for breaching his bail conditions.

    Giving evidence, the prison's custodial manager, Rebecca Edwards, said the prisoner had been put on suicide and self harm watch after his first of three suicide attempts.

    She described him as having "heightened emotions" and being frustrated at being back in prison but said he assured her he knew where to get help if he was struggling to cope.

    The inquest continues.

    The days of scrambling around for change for pay and display parking in Derby are to be a thing of the past, as new cashless payment machines are set to be rolled out across the city.

    The city council's introduced a pay-by-phone option for its on-street bays and off-street car parks - sending drivers a text when their time is due to expire.

    Card and smart phone payment facilities are also due to be installed at the city's Assembly Room and Chapel Street car parks this month.

    A robber from Nottinghamshire who was part of a three-man masked gang which raided a Lincolnshire supermarket has been jailed for eight and a half years.

    Corey Graley (pictured) was one of three men who carried out the early morning raid on the Tesco Express store in Winchester Road, Grantham at about 06:30 on 12 October last year.

    Jonathan Dunne, prosecuting, told Lincoln Crown Court the gang travelled from the Nottingham area in a stolen vehicle.

    The manager was taken at knife-point into the office and £4,000 worth of cigarettes were stolen.

    Staff and the only customer, a 71-year-old woman who had gone to buy newspapers and milk, were ordered to sit on the floor as two of the masked men accompanied the manager into the office.

    Graley was linked to the raid after his DNA was found on a sock found inside the vehicle.

    His DNA was also found on a key fob discarded near the scene.

    Police also traced CCTV footage of the robbers' vehicle stopping at a service station on their way to Grantham.

    Graley, 47, of Wigman Road, Bilborough, Nottingham, admitted robbery.

    A teenager who stabbed a man in the leg, arms and chest has been detained for six years, external.

    Michael McCarthy, 18, attacked his victim in Shepherd's Croft, Melton Mowbray on the morning of Sunday 31 March.

    The man, who was known to the teenager, was treated in hospital. He has since been discharged.

    McCarthy, of Drummond Walk, Melton Mowbray, pleaded guilty at Leicester Crown Court to wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon.

    He was sentenced to six years in a youth offenders institute plus an extension of three years on licence.

    A 40-year-old man has died in an accident while driving a forklift truck at an industrial site in Newark, police have said.
