A D-Day veteran from Nottingham is taking part in national commemorations to mark the 75th anniversary of the Normandy landings.
In 1944, Ron Lamboll was with a special unit of the Royal Engineers, tasked with taking, printing and sending back reconnaissance photos from behind enemy lines.
Now aged 98, the Royal British Legion is taking him, along with other veterans, back to the beaches at Normandy to remember all those who fought there.
Mr Lamboll, from West Bridgford, said he was looking forward to marking the anniversary.
Robert Purver, 94, from Derbyshire, also played a major role in the campaign, fighting alongside the Canadian Army to capture Juno beach in June 1944.
He said: "My heart was in my mouth. I was scared to death. But there was no way of going home and you just had to get on with it.
"You just had to hope upon hope that you reached the top of the beach without getting shot or blown up.
"When I look back I cannot believe some of the things we endured. It's never left me."
