  4. Concern over impact of vaping on heart healthpublished at 11:20 Greenwich Mean Time 13 November 2019

    PA Media

The professor behind a new study into the dangers of e-cigarettes has said claims they are a healthier alternative to traditional cigarettes may have been overstated.

The project, carried out by department of cardiology of the University Medical Centre in Mainz, Germany, and published in the European Health Journal, suggested just one vaping episode increased heart rates and caused the arteries to stiffen, and that the inner lining of the arteries, the endothelium, stopped working properly in users.

Lead researcher Professor Thomas Munzel said: "Our data may indicate that e-cigarettes are not a healthy alternative to traditional cigarettes, and their perceived 'safety' is not warranted.

"In addition, we still have no experience about the health side effects of e-cigarettes arising from long-term use."

The results come after a teenage boy from Nottingham nearly died when vaping caused a catastrophic reaction in his lungs.

Public Health England (PHE), has said that e-cigarettes are 95% less harmful than smoking.

Professor Jeremy Pearson, associate medical director at the British Heart Foundation, said: "This study reinforces that vaping should never be taken up by people who don't already smoke and emphasises the need for more research into the long-term impact of vaping on our health."
