Gedling Borough Council has called on Nottinghamshire County Council to replace "thousands of trees" that will be chopped down during the construction of a new access road.

Many trees have already been felled and more will follow to make way for the £40m road close to Gedling Country Park, which opened in 2015.

The Labour leader of the borough council, John Clarke, said while the road is needed for new homes, he challenged the Conservative leader of the county council Kay Cutts to mitigate the loss of the natural habitat.

About 500 native trees have been planted across the borough and hundreds more are planned, with a plan to be carbon neutral by 2030, the authority added.

Nottinghamshire County Council has yet to comment but previously said in information on its website that once the road is complete, new woodland will be planted, external.

  3. Surgeons praise 'fantastic' disposable sterile hijabspublished at 14:39 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2019

A council member of the Royal College of Surgeons has described new disposable sterile headscarves for staff to use in operating theatres as "fantastic".

The University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Trust is believed to be the first in the UK to introduce the items.

Junior doctor Farah Roslan, who is Muslim, had the idea during her training at the Royal Derby Hospital in 2017.

She said it came following infection concerns relating to her hijab that she had been wearing throughout the day.

Following research and tests on different materials, the headscarves were available to use by trust staff earlier in December.

Scarlett McNally, consultant orthopaedic surgeon and RCS council member, said it was "fantastic news".

"We are proud of the diverse NHS workforce. This disposable sterile headscarf will give female, Muslim medical students, doctors, surgeons and nurses more choice in how they cover their heads in theatre," she said.

"We want the operating theatre to be a welcoming place for all medical students, so the talented doctors of the future gain understanding of surgical practice, even if they do not go on to specialise in surgery."

Mrs McNally urged NHS trusts to go a step further and make them reusable for surgical teams to help reduce waste in hospitals.

"We have seen it scattered in recent years. Not only does it leave litter, the deer cannot differentiate between the food and added particles," the trust said.

Another problem the park sees at this time of year is people feeding the deer vegetables, like carrots.

Visitors are being asked not to feed the deer anything.

Rangers are currently giving the animals specialist supplementary food and minerals.

  17. Murder accused 'cannot remember going on rampage'published at 16:57 Greenwich Mean Time 17 December 2019

    Liam Barnes
    BBC News

A man accused of killing an 87-year-old by reversing into him with a car said he cannot remember going on what a trial has heard was a drug-fuelled rampage.

Gavin Collins is on trial charged with the murder of Terry Radford, who was hit by a car near his home at Mansfield Woodhouse on Good Friday this year.

The 39-year-old, of Addison Street in Tibshelf, told a jury at Nottingham Crown Court he had spent "90% to 95%" of his adult life in jail, and had been hearing voices since he was a child.

During his last stint in prison at HMP Ranby, he said prescribed drugs he took to treat mental health problems and an old shoulder injury were stolen from his room and led to him being denied access to them.

    Gavin Collins trial

Mr Collins said he then traded vapes for olanzapine with inmates in another part of the jail, but after he failed a drugs test he lost access to them, which led to him "going crazy" while held in a segregation unit.

The court heard he was without access to his medication in the weeks up to his release on 18 April, the day before Mr Radford was killed.

Mr Collins said he remembered asking a neighbour to borrow their car, and a subsequent crash, but did not remember other incidents outlined by the prosecution, including taking another woman's car, breaking into a family's home, smearing crucifixes made of blood on to the head of children or reversing a car into Mr Radford.

He told the court he remembered thinking a neighbour of the deceased who he had confronted "was a prophet", and "vaguely" recalled pouring out a white liquid he believed was cocaine.

    The trial continues.
