  14. Charities benefit from company's recycling finepublished at 17:45 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January 2020

A pet food company has given more than £75,000 to two Nottinghamshire wildlife charities after it failed to comply with recycling regulations for 15 years, according to the Environment Agency.

The Agency said Kennelpak Ltd, which is based in Stapleford, was unaware that it had obligations under the Producer Responsibility Obligations (Packaging Waste) Regulations 2007.

It failed to comply with the regulations between 2001 to 2016.

The money has been divided between Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust and the Erewash Canal Preservation & Development Association.

Joanne Weston, environment officer at the Environment Agency, said asking companies to contribute towards environmental projects was an increasingly popular method of enforcement for cases of less serious offending.

“Enforcement undertakings allow packaging waste producers to come into compliance and contribute towards environmental projects and improvements using the money they have saved," she said.

Erin McDaid, from Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust, said: “The contribution from Kennelpak Ltd provided an unexpected but very welcome boost to our fundraising and will help support habitat management and restoration."

The Erewash Canal Preservation & Development Association is planning to use its share on the money to install a macerator type pumped toilet in Sandiacre.

A spokesperson for Kennelpak Ltd said: “We take our environmental responsibilities very seriously, and we are pleased that two local and very worthy environmental charities will benefit as a result of our successful, proactive application.”
