  13. Inquiry into Lord Janner could be scrappedpublished at 11:19 Greenwich Mean Time 21 February 2020

    Alex Regan
    BBC News

The strand of the Independent Child Sex Abuse Inquiry on former Leicester MP and Labour peer Lord Janner could be scrapped.

The inquiry was due to investigate how allegations against the politician were handled by authorities.

But an alleged victim has decided to claim their right to total anonymity, making it impossible to hold all the hearings in public.

The inquiry was not going to rule on whether the allegations were true, but instead decide whether the politician was given preferential treatment due to his position as an MP.

Three police investigations into Lord Janner took place in the 1990s and 2000s, but no charges were brought.

Following a fourth inquiry, he was charged in 2015 with offences against nine alleged victims. Police say 38 people accused him of abuse.

The peer, who suffered from dementia, was ruled unfit to plead, and died aged 87 before a trial of the facts could take place.

His family have always maintained his innocence.

Chairwoman of the inquiry, Prof Alexis Jay, will make a decision on whether this part of the inquiry should be discontinued.

Legal teams for Lord Janner's accusers have said: "If this investigation is shut down our clients consider that it would be unlawful."

The inquiry's lead counsel Brian Altman QC said he has advised Prof Jay to continue the inquiry, despite the fact some of the hearings will be behind closed doors, and unreportable.
