1. Leaked report makes case for fourth bridge over Trentpublished at 09:04 Greenwich Mean Time 18 February 2020

    Kit Sandeman
    Local Democracy Reporter

A leaked study shows a fourth bridge over the River Trent would alleviate congestion, reduce journey times and be an economic boost for the area.

The report was commissioned by Nottinghamshire County Council in 2016, but has only come to light now.

It examined the feasibility of a bridge from near the back of Colwick Industrial Estate to land to the west of Radcliffe-on-Trent, next to an existing train bridge.

The Labour leader of Gedling Borough Council, councillor John Clarke, says the city and county "can’t afford not to build" another bridge and favours the crossing at Colwick, hoping it could be built for cars, cyclists, pedestrians and even a tram.

But the Conservative leader of the county council, Kay Cutts, says the bridge should not be built here, but at Gunthorpe – an 11 mile drive downstream.

She said she does not oppose a fourth bridge but believes the idea of one at Colwick is "impractical", environmentally damaging and would be opposed by residents.

The county council has been approached for comment about the report.
