  3. Health bosses: Get flu jab to help ease pandemic pressurepublished at 16:44 British Summer Time 18 September 2020

    BBC News

Health bosses in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire have urged people to take "individual and collective" responsibility to stop the spread of Covid-19 and avoid a severe escalation of the pandemic this winter.

Alison Challenger, Nottingham's director of public health, said the R-rate in the city and county was currently above 1, with the country entering a "critical period" as people spend more time indoors and the flu season arrives.

Jonathan Gibbins, director of public health for Nottinghamshire, urged people to re-engage with the basics of social distancing, washing their hands and not touching their face to try to keep cases down.

They added they were not seeing any major hotspots locally but a general rise in cases on an "unfavourable trajectory" across the whole area in line with the national trend.

Both urged people to get a flu jab - or nasal spray for children - to help ease strain on the health system over the autumn and winter period.

  6. Elderly woman beats loft burglar with walking stickspublished at 13:49 British Summer Time 18 September 2020

    BBC News

A man who broke into a house through a "secret passageway" in the loft was beaten by the homeowner with her walking sticks, police said.

Nottinghamshire Police said the elderly woman was in her living room, on Lincoln Bridge Road, Newark, when she saw a hand wearing a black glove appear at the door on the evening of 8 July.

The "brave" victim, who opened the door to find Michael Barrett, tried to fight him off with her walking sticks but was pushed to the ground and watched him escape through the loft, officers added.

Barrett, 39, of Yorke Drive, Newark, was arrested and pleaded guilty to burglary and causing actual bodily harm at an earlier hearing.

He was sentenced to three years and nine months in prison at Nottingham Crown Court on Thursday.

Police said officers searched the house and found several bricks in the loft had been put in place without cement.

Det Sgt Andy Hall said: "It’s our belief that Barrett had made himself a secret entry point into this house by removing the bricks and tried to cover his tracks by putting them back in place behind him, probably in a bid to come and go as he pleased and steal items over time."

He added Barrett committed a "despicable crime, deliberately preying on an elderly woman" who "acted bravely".

  7. Initial investigation in to police cell death inconclusivepublished at 13:47 British Summer Time 18 September 2020

    David Pittam
    BBC News Online

Initial investigations have not been able to say what caused a man to collapse and die while in a police cell.

Mark Pryor, 46, from Derby, was arrested in the city on 4 September for failing to attend court.

He was taken to hospital after being found unresponsive in his cell the following day and was pronounced dead shortly after.

Coroner Dr Robert Hunter opened his inquest today and said the initial post-mortem examination had not found any signs of a "traumatic" death or any signs he had been restrained or assaulted.

But it also could not put his death down to "natural disease" at this stage.

He said more forensic tests are set to be carried out and adjourned the inquest.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct is also carrying out an investigation.
