"We have good CCTV of it all and we won't stand for this sort of thing," said Mr Timmermans.

"The last thing I want is for it to happen again and become acceptable for people to think they can just come and dump stuff."

  11. Bring Leicester in line with other areas, urges city mayorpublished at 12:25 British Summer Time 15 September 2020

    Amy Orton
    Local Democracy Reporter

Leicester's mayor Sir Peter Soulsby has called on the government to lift remaining local lockdown restrictions to bring the city in line with the rest of the country.

Tighter restrictions have been in place in Leicester since 29 June and while many rules have since been eased, people from different households are still banned from meeting indoors or in private gardens.

He said the introduction of the "rule of six" across England would have been a logical moment to bring Leicester in line with other areas.

"From the day we went into local lockdown we have asked what we might need to do to get out of it and we still don't know," Mr Soulsby said.

"The problem is that they use different data and figures to justify it each time they extend, so there really is no way we know what has to happen for it to be lifted.

"There are other areas with higher rates and no restrictions. We could easily be brought in line with other areas without local lockdowns and observe the rule of six."

In the week to 11 September, Leicester had a seven-day coronavirus infection rate of 79.3 - the 17th highest rate in England.

The Local Democracy Reporting Service has asked the Department of Health and Social Care on several occasions about when the lockdown will be lifted but has not received a response.

She said: "I am having to cancel my work day by day because I am hanging on waiting.

"I have a bride's hair to do and I have had to cancel her until I know what the situation is. Why aren't they telling us, why is it taking so long?

"My daughter can't go to school - I can't go to work and she can't go to school until we get these results."

The Department of Health and Social Care said: "Laboratories are processing more than a million tests a week and we recently announced new facilities and technology to process results even faster."

A woman who hasn't seen her family for seven months said living under the local lockdown in Leicester has been "heartbreaking".

Suzi Emma Holmes moved to Leicester a year ago with her partner Joe, but her parents, brother and sister and their children still live in Hull. Due to the local lockdown, the family hasn't been able to spend time together.

The 30-year-old said she keeps checking the infection rates and figures to see if there's a chance of restrictions being lifted, but said any signs of hope are "dashed every time".

With more of the local restrictions in Leicester being lifted today, she said it's "incredibly difficult" she still doesn't know when she'll next be able to see her family.
