    A terminally ill man has called the theft of his mobility scooter - leaving him unable to leave the house - "gutting".

    Derek Trigg, 70, a former merchant navy seaman, found his black and grey scooter had been taken from his home in Fenton Close, Newark, at about 23:40 on 25 January.

    A neighbour told police they saw two men lift a scooter into the back of a red hatchback shortly beforehand.

    The cancer patient said the Ambassador scooter he bought in 2014 for £1,095 was his "lifeline" and that he had "fond memories" of using it with his late wife Tina.

    "I have fond memories of Tina holding on to the side of the buggy and plodding along beside me," he said.

    "It has been completely gutting to lose it and I'm at a loss without it. It's completely taken away my independence and my lifeline really.

    "These heartless thieves have taken away the one enjoyment I've been able to have during the pandemic and now I'm just stuck indoors not able to go anywhere."

    Police are appealing for information and have shared an image of a similar model, pictured below.

    A tribute to Captain Sir Tom Moore has been installed in a Derbyshire nature reserve.

    The silhouette sculpture of the fundraiser, who died on Tuesday, replaces a World War One statue which was stolen from Thistly Place Meadow in Hatton last year.

    It was made and donated by a local steel fabrication company.

    Anthony Ball, from charity Dove Valley Community Project which owns the reserve, said: “For this to be in little old Hatton is amazing.”

    He said the “stunning” new sculpture is already attracting a lot of attention.

    “I walked down the village yesterday and there was this one chap, I spoke to him about it and he was crying," he said.

    Capt Sir Tom raised almost £33m for NHS charities by walking laps of his garden.

    Mr Ball said: “He’s been a ray of sunlight in the dark. He’s been amazing.”

    Five teenagers have been arrested after a man was pushed and had his electric scooter stolen at a tram stop in Nottingham.

    Nottinghamshire Police said the victim was threatened with a small flick knife and a knuckleduster and attacked after a group of teenagers got off the tram at David Lane, Old Basford, on Thursday night.

    Officers were alerted after the man's partner rang police when he returned home.

    Det Sgt Chris Berryman said: "This must have been a terrifying ordeal for the victim who was simply just trying to get back home.

    "The victim's partner, clearly distressed having heard about the ordeal, rang the police after he returned home."

    An 18-year-old man, three 16-year-old boys and a 15-year-old boy have been arrested on suspicion of robbery and possession of an offensive weapon. They remain in custody.

    A boy who was left out of pocket after people were taking eggs he was selling on the roadside without paying has been crying “happy tears” after dozens of people came out to support him.

    Devon Elliott, 11, sells eggs to fund the upkeep of his chickens from a stand in Belper.

    However, passers-by have been taking boxes without leaving the correct money, according to his mother.

    Since his story was posted on Facebook, external, many people have showed their support – with some even offering to help cover the cost of his lost income.

    Taj Badh wrote: “Some people are so cruel. What a brilliant lad. When this lockdown is over young man I shall try and get to Belper and make you a generous donation.”

    Devon’s mum, Lianne Glendinning, said: “Devon’s overwhelmed by it all really.

    “He’s saying he didn’t realise so many people enjoyed what he does and it’s made him think what he’s doing is worthwhile.

    Fran Marriott, an advanced nurse practitioner, has been administering the jabs at the Richard Herrod Centre in Carlton in her spare time.

    Yesterday she said: “I had the honour of giving my stepdad his first Covid vaccination.”

    Brian Sargeant was eligible for the vaccine because he is aged over 70.

    A man who assaulted two nurses and smashed a window while refusing treatment for coronavirus has avoided jail.

    Jake Chambers, of Chedworth Close, Nottingham, had tested positive for the virus, but was trying to leave the Queen's Medical Centre on Tuesday morning.

    Police said he grabbed a nurse and pushed her away, which caused bruising, and then pushed another nurse with both hands.

    The 23-year-old then picked up a chair and a drip stand and struck a hospital window, causing it to crack.

    He was arrested and appeared at Nottingham Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, when he pleaded guilty to two counts of assault and criminal damage.

    Chambers was given a 20-day community order and ordered to pay a £140 fine and £300 compensation.

    Both officers who were involved in the arrest are self-isolating for 10 days, the force confirmed.

    The mother of an 11-year-old egg-seller has asked people to stop taking them without paying.

    Devon Elliott delivers eggs from his own chickens to neighbours in Belper, as well as selling some on the roadside with an honesty box.

    But mum Lianne Glendinning said in the past month people have started taking the eggs for little or no money.

    "It's just upsetting, I'm disappointed in people. The odd one or two I could excuse, but it's nearly every day now," she said.

    A man has been jailed after a parcel containing MDMA disguised as sweets was intercepted by customs officers.

    Ahmadalkhatin Alama, 22, was sentenced at Nottingham Crown Court to four years in prison after pleading guilty to the importation of class A drugs.

    Police said UK Border Force officers found blue tablets, which were later discovered to be MDMA, wrapped in sweet packets at Coventry Airport on 3 February last year.

    The drugs, which had arrived from Germany, were seized and Nottinghamshire Police was informed of where they were heading.

    Alama, of Seven Oaks Crescent in Bramcote, was arrested a few days later.

    PC Graham Saville said: "Fortunately, the UK Border Force officers spotted the package and got in touch with us before it could get any further.

    "The quick action and the information we got as a result of this means that these potentially lethal drugs are off the streets and out of the wrong hands, and a man involved in this importation of drugs into Nottinghamshire is now behind bars for a significant amount of time."

    A hospital boss has said he was "incredibly angry" a member of staff was racially abused by a patient at the weekend.

    Aldarico Jr Velasco, a nurse from the Philippines, has tweeted about the abuse he was subjected to at the Royal Derby Hospital.

    Gavin Boyle, chief executive of the University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust, said a campaign is being launched to tackle racism against staff.

    Mr Boyle said: “Not many things make me angry but that made me feel incredibly angry.

    "To be abused in that way is totally unacceptable.

    "We are starting a campaign to remind everybody who uses our service of the incredible contribution that all of our colleagues make but particularly focusing on our BAME colleagues at the moment."

    He said all staff had been written to, external making the point no-one should be subjected to that kind of abuse and he said they were also looking at other ways of getting the message out, for example with signs in the main entrances.

    The Met Office is warning snow and ice will affect most of the East Midlands over the weekend and Monday.

    The yellow warning is in place from 15:00 on Saturday until 00:00 on Monday, external and it means there's a small chance of travel delays and power cuts.

    The Met Office said: "Cold conditions will persist through the weekend and into the following week with some disruption from snow and ice possible."

    A church, a four-star hotel and a village hall are opening as Covid-19 vaccination sites today for Derbyshire residents.

    It brings the total number of jab venues in the area covered by the Derby and Derbyshire clinical commissioning group to 23.
