Police are appealing for information after a war memorial in Nottingham was scratched and damaged.
Nottinghamshire Police said they were made aware of the vandalism at the Victoria Embankment on Friday, but the force said it was not clear when it happened.
The memorial is dedicated to those who lost their lives during World War One.
Supt Paul Winter said: "We are appalled and saddened that someone would think it is appropriate to do this and we will be thoroughly investigating the matter.
“I am now appealing to anyone who may have witnessed something suspicious to report it to Nottinghamshire Police as soon as possible."

Two couples have been taken to hospital after they were rescued through windows in two house fires.
Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service said the fire at the homes, which are joined by a car port, in Radbourne was "well developed" when they arrived shortly after 03:00 BST.
The four people were rescued with the help of six firefighters before being treated for smoke inhalation by paramedics and then taken to hospital.
A joint police and fire investigation has concluded the most probable cause of the fire was accidental due to electrical items, said the fire service.
Station manager David Diggins, who was at the scene, said crews managed to rescue the people through windows using a ladder.
He said: "All those persons were transferred to the care of the ambulance service and all have been taken to hospital for further treatment.
"We are unsure of their injuries at present."
He added: “Thankfully the occupants of both properties were alerted by their smoke alarms and were able to call the fire service.
“If you haven’t got smoke alarms fitted in your home, please get them fitted as soon as possible, and ensure you test them weekly to ensure they are working.”
Firefighters from Kingsway, Nottingham Road, Ascot Drive, Alfreton, Melbourne and Staffordshire’s Tutbury station attended the incident, supported by the command unit from Long Eaton and a water carrier from Ashbourne.
Western Power engineers were also on the scene to make sure the properties were safe.

Hundreds of people have gathered in cities around the East Midlands in peaceful protests against the government's Police and Crime Bill.
Rallies took place in Derby, Leicester and Nottingham this afternoon against the bill, which was passed by MPs earlier this month.
Critics have said the new laws will restrict their right to stage demonstrations.
The first Bristol Kill the Bill protest turned violent and police were attacked.
In Derby, about 150 protesters stood peacefully in Cathedral green this afternoon.
Vanessa Boon, who was there, said: “This bill is the most audacious, greatest attack on our human rights that we have seen certainly during my lifetime.
“Derby is rising - we’re not looking the other way while our government tries to transfer all of our public assets and public rights to the rights of the few.”
In Nottingham two protests took place, the first around noon in Old Market Square with about 30 people.
While at 13:00 between 50 and 60 people gathered outside Nottingham Crown Court.
Finally in Leicester, people also gathered with placards at the Clock Tower
