Police were called to Brierley Cottages, Sutton-in-Ashfield, at 03:00 BST on Wednesday.

It is thought the dog escaped after the burglars broke in through the front door, before smashing up a TV and ornaments at the woman's house.

But the chihuahua was found nearby by a dog warden and was soon back with its owner.

Nottinghamshire Police's Ch Insp Amy Styles-Jones said: "While we currently believe the animal escaped in fear rather than being stolen, as a dog owner myself I can understand how upsetting it would be for your dog to go missing.

“I’m pleased he was quickly found and returned thanks to some swift action."

Officers are still trying to ascertain whether anything was stolen from the woman's property.
