A teenager from Mansfield has raised £3,000 for brain tumour research in memory of her step-dad who suddenly died from the condition.

Scarlett Skyes, 18, said it came as a "huge shock" when her stepdad Paul Malcolm was diagnosed with a grade-3 brain tumour in 2017. He died just five weeks later.

Mr Malcolm, 48, was a mental health nurse and former Army reservist who completed two operational tours of Afghanistan.

"I was only 15 at the time and couldn’t really comprehend what had happened," said Scarlett.

"He’d become ill so quickly and declined rapidly. It took a huge toll on my mum."

When Scarlett turned 18 in January, she marked her birthday by setting up a Facebook fundraiser in Mr Malcom's memory and received donations of £1,500.

“Birthdays have been hard since Paul died," she added. "I remember feeling like I didn’t want to grow older without him being there. But when I raised all that money through my birthday fundraiser, I realised I could turn it into something positive.

"As a family, we are passionate about ensuring no other family has to experience the pain we have been through."

Her school friends have also joined in her fundraising efforts, and chose Brain Tumour Research as their charity to support for the summer term - raising a further £1,500.

A health worker has said she was "honoured" to be nominated to attend a special service to mark the 73rd anniversary of the NHS.

Diane Caunt, a specialist domestic at Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, also had a surprise chat with the Duke of Cambridge and the prime minister during the ceremony at St Paul's Cathedral in London on Monday.

Prince William joined NHS staff at the thanksgiving service, and later hosted a Buckingham Palace tea party to thank NHS workers.

The trust said during the pandemic, Mrs Caunt - whose job is to deep clean wards on a rotational basis - has worked over her contracted hours to cover for colleagues and to offer extra support.

Her only time off has been when she herself tested positive for Covid-19, with her husband becoming ill just a few days later.

  8. Landlord sentenced for safety breaches after fire at flatspublished at 17:54 British Summer Time 5 July 2021

    BBC News

A landlord has been sentenced and fined £50,000 after firefighters discovered safety breaches while tackling a blaze at flats in Derby.

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service were called to the fire in the London Road flats on 23 November 2019.

It was found some fire doors had no self-closers or smoke seals, the kitchen door did not close due to a lack of maintenance and the fire alarm was not working.

There was no evidence of a fire risk assessment and fire extinguishers were out of test date, the fire service added.

Owner and landlord Thirunavukkarasu Kulandaisamy, of Tiller Close, Derby, admitted several breaches of fire safety regulations at an earlier hearing.

He was sentenced to nine months in prison, suspended for two years, fined £50,000 and ordered to pay costs of £22,861 and a victim surcharge of £149 at Derby Crown Court on Monday.

Fire protection group manager Lee Smith said the fire had taken place in the top flat, but it could have been a "very different story" had it started in the flats below.

"Quite simply, this was a fire that could have had a catastrophic outcome due to the lack of fire safety measures Mr. Kulandaisamy had in place," he said.

"Thankfully, no-one was killed or seriously injured."

Dangerous drivers have been caught repeatedly mounting the pavement at speed on a Derby road described as a "rat-run" by a local mother.

The footage, filmed by the resident in Eastwood Drive who did not wish to be named, shows a number of vehicles going on to the pavement to get past oncoming traffic without stopping.

Campaigners are calling for the route to be closed to through traffic.

A spokesman for Derby City Council said the area around Eastwood Drive "has been selected as a priority by the Littleover ward", with an action plan "agreed to test measures in the area to reduce traffic and vehicle speeds".

"Several options are being explored, but the first option is to trial road cushions in the coming weeks for a period of three months, then consult the community on the impact of the trial, and provide outline information on other options which will need further development," the spokesman added.

  14. Bins not collected due to lorry driver shortagepublished at 14:54 British Summer Time 5 July 2021

    BBC Radio Derby

Residents living in parts of Derbyshire have not had their bins collected for weeks due to a national shortage of lorry drivers.

Peter O’Brien, a Labour Derbyshire Dales District councillor, said opposition members called for an independent investigation into why some residents have not had their recycling bins emptied for six weeks.

He said since April, bins have regularly been left unemptied, with cans, cardboard and food waste spilling over into the streets.

“We all accept that occasionally things can go wrong, but the current situation has become intolerable," he added.

This comes after the Road Haulage Association said it believed there was currently a shortfall of about 60,000 lorry drivers.

The council has apologised for the disruption to waste and recycling collections in some areas of the Dales and said crews worked on Saturday to try to clear the backlog but were not able to collect all missed bins.

"We are working closely with our contractor Serco’s senior managers to come up with a solution.

"A number of steps have already been taken including increasing the rates of pay for drivers, trying to source HGV drivers from other contracts and councils and the upskilling of staff," the authority said.

Garry Purdy, Conservative leader of Derbyshire Dales District Council, said there would not be an independent inquiry, adding the issue was not specific to Serco or the Derbyshire Dales.

    Samantha Noble
    BBC News Online

Residents living in one Nottinghamshire neighbourhood have bagged a share of £4.1m in a lottery win.

More than 600 players in the Tuxford area, near Newark, pocketed a portion of the cash in Saturday's People's Postcode Lottery.

It was the single biggest ever People's Postcode Lottery prize, organisers said.

The full winning postcode was NG22 0JA - in Haynes Close, Tuxford - and four people there won £333,009 per ticket.

Half of the prize money is split between all players living in the full postcode area.

The other half is divided between those who have the first part of the winning postcode in their address, NG22 0 for this draw.

People win cash for each ticket they buy, so if they have more than one ticket in the draw, they win more money.

He added they plan to help out the family with the winnings, as well as buying a home - and possibly a Bentley.
