A teenager from Mansfield has raised £3,000 for brain tumour research in memory of her step-dad who suddenly died from the condition.
Scarlett Skyes, 18, said it came as a "huge shock" when her stepdad Paul Malcolm was diagnosed with a grade-3 brain tumour in 2017. He died just five weeks later.
Mr Malcolm, 48, was a mental health nurse and former Army reservist who completed two operational tours of Afghanistan.
"I was only 15 at the time and couldn’t really comprehend what had happened," said Scarlett.
"He’d become ill so quickly and declined rapidly. It took a huge toll on my mum."
When Scarlett turned 18 in January, she marked her birthday by setting up a Facebook fundraiser in Mr Malcom's memory and received donations of £1,500.
“Birthdays have been hard since Paul died," she added. "I remember feeling like I didn’t want to grow older without him being there. But when I raised all that money through my birthday fundraiser, I realised I could turn it into something positive.
"As a family, we are passionate about ensuring no other family has to experience the pain we have been through."
Her school friends have also joined in her fundraising efforts, and chose Brain Tumour Research as their charity to support for the summer term - raising a further £1,500.
