Hospital bosses in Leicester say they are seeing patients at their emergency department in high numbers "usually only seen in winter".
About 30 ambulances were seen waiting outside the Leicester Royal Infirmary last night according to reports.
A University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust spokeswoman said: “Our emergency department teams are working tirelessly to care for patients.
“All patients who present at the emergency department are triaged and seen in order of clinical priority, regardless of how they arrive."
A council says the cancellation is due to "ongoing concerns and uncertainty" about Covid.

Patients with minor illnesses are being asked to consider if they need to attend hospital after a rise in admissions.
Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said attendances at its A&E department in recent weeks had been similar to numbers expected in November.
They're asking people to only visit A&E "if their illness or injury is life or limb threatening or if it needs immediate treatment" and call 111 if they need advice on less serious conditions.
Quote MessageIf you have an illness which isn't acute and which doesn't need looking at immediately, then our accident and emergency department isn't the right place for you to be. We will treat anyone who needs us, but we treat patients in order of clinical need, so those with more minor ailments can be waiting a very long time."
