  4. Nottingham trust given warning notice by health inspectorspublished at 08:05 British Summer Time 20 August 2021

    Local Democracy Reporting Service

Nottingham's two biggest hospitals have been warned by inspectors that they are failing to meet legal standards of patient care.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has served Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH) with a warning notice – issued when care "falls below what is legally required".

The health watchdog has ordered the trust to improve governance and culture at the Queen's Medical Centre and Nottingham City Hospital following an inspection in July.

The warning comes after maternity services at the trust were rated "inadequate" by the CQC.

    Queen's Medical Centre

A CQC spokesperson said: "We carried out an inspection of the trust's leadership in July 2021.

"Following that inspection, the trust was issued with a warning notice requiring it to take action to improve corporate and clinical governance and oversight of risk, and to ensure a more positive, open and supportive culture across the organisation.

"We will report on the full findings from the inspection as soon as we are able to."

It is unclear if the warning notice relates to "continuing failure to comply with a legal requirement". If it does, the CQC may take further action.

NUH deputy chief executive and chief financial officer Rupert Egginton said: "We accept the CQC's comments. Work is already under way to learn from the findings and make improvements so that the organisation is led as effectively as possible and we continue to provide world class care for our patients."

Adrian Oulds, head of service delivery, said: "While the work we're carrying out is complex, our ambition is to open an additional lane across the bridge around the end of September and to restore the bridge back to its original traffic layout around the end of November.

"As part of this stage of repairs, we're putting a new strengthening system in place on the exterior of the structure, which will make it much easier to access for any future maintenance.

"While we have lanes closed, we're also taking the opportunity to carry out other maintenance work which would have been needed at some point in the future."
