Two guinea pigs dumped in a wet cardboard box have been taken to safety - despite giving their rescuers the runaround.

RSPCA officers were alerted to the animals' plight by a member of the public on Monday.

The box, which had no food or water, was left in woodland at Ashgate Plantation in Chesterfield, Derbyshire.

While the area was being inspected, one of the guinea pigs made a break for it through a hole in the box.

An officer gave chase but the animal had second thoughts and returned back to the shelter.

Both are now in the care of the RSPCA and are recovering well at Derby's Abbey Street Animal Rehoming Centre.

Staff there have named the ginger long-haired guinea pig Pixie and the white one Elphie. Both are thought to be about three years old.

Officer Andy Sowden, who estimated the animals had been left for about 24 hours, said: "These poor guinea pigs were lucky to be found - and had they not been discovered I am not sure they would have survived much longer with no food and water and with other predators about.

"It is awful to think someone could just dump their pets like rubbish in a remote wood and I am keen to find the person responsible."

  4. Bus drivers to start overtime ban in pay disputepublished at 10:13 British Summer Time 2 September 2021

    Reporter, BBC News Online

Bus drivers in the East Midlands are to take industrial action as part of a national campaign over pay.

Members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT) employed by Stagecoach will ban overtime and rest-day working from 17 September to 1 October and again for two weeks from 22 October.

The company runs a number of services throughout Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.

RMT general secretary Mick Lynch said: "It's well established now that we are facing a national shortage of bus drivers as staff leave over poor pay and conditions.

"RMT is fighting for professional wages for professional drivers and our East Midlands Stagecoach members are leading that charge, with others across the country set to follow."

A Stagecoach East Midlands spokesperson said: "We expect the action will have a minimal impact on our services.

"However, we are disappointed with the union's stance, particularly when we have worked hard to protect the jobs of our people, bus networks are requiring taxpayer support as a result of the pandemic, and the focus should be on protecting the long-term sustainability of services for the local community."
