A man was stopped from getting a clean getaway after he attempted to steal a washing machine from a bungalow.

Nottinghamshire Police said the 57-year-old had tried to take the appliance from inside a new-build property in Winrow Gardens, Basford, on Monday evening when he was confronted by members of the public who kept him there until officers arrived.

He was subsequently arrested on suspicion of burglary and possession of a bladed article.

The force said officers also discovered the would-be thief had even created a space in his own property ready for the new washing machine.

Det Con Ben Grayson praised those who challenged the man.

“While we would never encourage anyone to confront suspects or put themselves in danger, I would like to thank the members of the public who apprehended this man last night," he said.
