  2. Dalian Atkinson niece contacted ex-footballers charitypublished at 11:09 British Summer Time 17 August 2016

    The niece of former Aston Villa striker Dalian Atkinson had contacted a charity that helps ex-footballers - two months ago, because she was worried about him, it has emerged.

    Mr Atkinson died after being Tasered outside his father's home in Trench, earlier this week. 

    Geoff Scott, the Chief Executive of charity Ex-Pro, said her call had been logged and put into their diary for a follow-up call. 

    He says it's important not to speculate too much on Mr Atkinson's state of mind - but to wait for the outcome of the investigation.

  3. Barracks plans go on showpublished at 11:05 British Summer Time 17 August 2016

    Plans for the redevelopment of Copthorne Barracks in Shrewsbury are to go on show this afternoon. 

    Most of the site's been empty, apart from a section used by the reservists, since last year and there are proposals to build homes there.

    Those go on show at Shrewsbury Town's stadium this afternoon.

    The tower on Copthorne Road will remain, but the rest will be pulled down imminently.

    Peter Nutting, councillor for the Copthorne Ward, has called for some of the buildings and open spaces to protected.

  4. Severn Valley Railway gets permission for Bridgnorth expansionpublished at 11:02 British Summer Time 17 August 2016

    Severn Valley Railway has got planning permission for a multimillion-pound expansion at Bridgnorth. 

    The station building will be expanded, creating a café, a larger pub and improved toilet facilities.

    The plans, which have been in the pipeline for more than three years, also include a 53-bed hostel for volunteers who work at the heritage railway. 

  5. Travel: Delays continue on M54published at 11:01 British Summer Time 17 August 2016

    There are long delays on the M54 heading west towards Shrewsbury and queuing traffic stretches back past junction five for Telford now.

    Vehicles are being taken on a 33-mile (53km) diversion past Randlay and Hodnet, rejoining the A49 at Battlefield, north of Shrewsbury.

    Meanwhile, delays caused by an accident on the M54 between junction three for Albrighton and two for Wolverhampton have cleared up.

    Big Ron always rated Dalian as one of Villa’s best signings.

    He was part of the team that beat Manchester United to win the League Cup in 1994, having scored in both legs of the semi-final victory over Tranmere Rovers.

    At Villa, Atkinson forged a fine frontline partnership with Dean Saunders (pictured), scoring 60 league goals between them in three seasons together before both departed for Turkish clubs - Atkinson to Fenerbahce and Saunders to Galatasaray.

    Apart from a brief eight-match loan spell at Manchester City, Atkinson, who won an England B cap in 1990, never had another English club.

    He saw out his career in France with Metz, Ittihad in Saudi Arabia, before finishing in 2001 with Korean sides Daejeon Citizen and Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors.
