  1. Free park-and-rides for two weeks in flood-hit townpublished at 20:00 Greenwich Mean Time 27 February 2020

    A transport service has been made free for two weeks in Shrewsbury to encourage visitors to return to the town in the aftermath of the floods.

    Shropshire Council said it had made the changes to its park-and-ride service to help support the town’s businesses.

    It comes as flood water recedes and town centre roads have largely reopened.

    Steve Davenport, cabinet member for highways and transport, said the free service would operate from this Saturday to Saturday 14 March and he hoped it would help the town centre "thrive again".

    “As the water levels fall and the town starts to get back to normal, we want people to start coming back into the centre, showing their support for the town and spending money in the shops, cafes, pubs and other businesses.

    The service will operate from all three park and ride sites – Meole Brace, Harlescott and Oxon.

    A severe "danger to life" flood warning still covers the area, external and residents had to be evacuated as an emergency measure yesterday when a flood barrier buckled and water seeped underneath.

    Local businessman Richard Eley said the flooding has been "devastating for businesses".

    “We’re still not out of the water yet, Ironbridge is always flooded and most residents are used to it, but lessons need to be learned," he said.

    David Nolan, who lives on the Wharfage and was asked to leave his home yesterday, said better flood defences are needed.

    "There are ways and means of solving it so I'm not ever concerned that there won't be a solution. There will be a solution. But it's never great when you've got your house to clean out," he said.

    If the River Severn does come over the top of Ironbridge's flood defences, it could happen very quickly and the water would be very fast-flowing, the Environment Agency is warning.

    It repeated its plea for people to stay clear of the Wharfage and EA spokesman Tim Norton (pictured below) added: "We don't want to be evacuating people in the middle of the night."

    The river has now risen to about 6.7m and the barrier was designed to cope with a level of up to 6.8m.

    It could reach up to 7m by the morning.

    The water levels in Ironbridge have now exceeded those seen last week and could reach up to 7m early tomorrow morning.

    The flood barrier on the Wharfage was designed to hold back water up to 6.8m high, so if it goes higher than that, water would start coming over the top, external.

    Telford and Wrekin Council said people in all the homes at risk had been warned and advised to move out, with free accommodation being offered at the nearby Tontine Hotel.

    It also warned this flooding was likely to be prolonged, meaning the likely closure of a number of roads, external for several days.
