    Plans to build a new out-of-town supermarket have been revived, just before outline permission gained three years ago was about to expire.

    The proposal involves a store with a 195-space car park and petrol station in the Rocks Green area on the outskirts of Ludlow and the application, which will go before Shropshire councillors later this year, said it will create up to 150 jobs.

    It's not been said which supermarket chain wants to develop the site, but councillor Andy Boddington, who represents the Ludlow North ward, said he's not expecting it to be one of the discount retailers.

  2. Cathedral restoration project uncovers Pugin mosaic floorpublished at 14:13 Greenwich Mean Time 4 March 2020

    A restoration project at Shrewsbury's Roman Catholic cathedral has uncovered a Pugin mosaic floor that has been hidden for nearly 40 years.

    The diocese knew it was there but didn't know what state it would be in and will now decide what to do with it, although it has already ruled out removing the tiles.

    The month-long restoration of the cathedral interior is due to be complete by Palm Sunday.

  3. Floodwater 'will take time to clear'published at 12:11 Greenwich Mean Time 4 March 2020

    The Environment Agency is warning that floodwaters will take some time to shift, even though river levels are falling.

    Henry Wilson, who has a farm near Alberbury, said previous floods had cleared in a matter of days, but this time it could be up to a month before he is able to return to some fields.

    Joanne Boddison, manager of the Best Western hotel in Ironbridge, said it had been two weeks of "difficult times".

    "The first week a lot of people were with us for a couple of nights - this last week we've had people with us for looking-on nearly a week," she said.

    "They're definitely feeling like this is their second home now."

    "It's been a difficult week for us all - obviously for the residents and local businesses but.. it's made us all closer together - that has been brilliant."

    People living in Bridgnorth have told BBC Radio Shropshire they feel overlooked and want better protection after the latest floods.

    At its worst, large parts of the town including caravan parks, Severnside, Riverside and Severn Terrace were flooded this week.

    Three flood warnings still cover the town and surrounding areas, external, with the Environment Agency saying the River Severn could rise again in the coming days.

    Local resident James Croft told BBC Radio Shropshire people wanted more certainty as far as flood barriers were concerned.

    "All we hear about is Ironbridge, Shrewsbury, Bewdley, Worcester, all with flood defences. Bridgnorth has nothing and that mustn't continue," he said.

    The government has said it'll spent £4bn on flood defences nationally over five years.

    Parts of Shropshire near to the Welsh border are still flooded this morning as rain falls across the area.

    A flood warning still covers the area, external around the village of Melverley where West Mercia Police said roads were still underwater. , external

    The Environment Agency said levels on the nearby River Vyrnwy had dropped, but slowly.

    The fear is, with rain falling in Wales as well as Shropshire, it'll fall into the catchment area and flow into the River Severn.

    The barriers buckled from rising water levels resulting in police calling an emergency evacuation of Wharfage properties on Wednesday.

    However, with the river level falling, the agency's hoping to make repairs to the barriers before the potential impact of more rain which has been forecast.

    Telford MP Lucy Allan has thanked Environment Secretary George Eustice for visiting flood-hit Ironbridge today.

    During his visit, Mr Eustice said Prime Minister Boris Johnson wanted him to "take the lead" on the response to the floods.

    Ms Allan said the visit "meant a lot" to residents and business owners.
