The leader of Telford & Wrekin Council says he is "deeply concerned" by Owen Paterson's attack on his authority.
The Conservative North Shropshire MP accused Telford councillors of "vanity" and said they were misleading the public over hospital reorganisation proposals - he also suggested the authority should be abolished.
Councillor Shaun Davies, the Labour leader of the authority, said there was "no appetite among Telford & Wrekin residents to be governed from Shrewsbury" adding there were "stark differences" between the two areas, making a merger impossible.
He also called on the Conservative MPs for Telford & The Wrekin to distance themselves from Mr Paterson's remarks., external
Quote MessageOwen Paterson and Conservative MPs not only want to close down the £28m women and children's unit, which only opened two years ago. He also wants to remove our 24-hour-a-day seven-day-a-week A&E and because he does not like what councillors are doing in Telford & Wrekin, he also wants to take away the council from residents

The North Shropshire Conservative MP Owen Paterson has launched an attack, external on Labour-run Telford & Wrekin Council, saying the authority is "not fit for purpose" and accusing it of "deliberate misrepresentation" of the Shropshire hospital proposals.
Telford & Wrekin Council has threatened the NHS with a legal challenge, following a report which recommended the downgrading of Telford's A&E department and moving women and children's services to Shrewsbury.
Mr Paterson said the delay caused by the legal challenge was a "total waste of public money" which could jeopardise the process and maybe force the permanent closure of one of the county's A&Es.
He accused Telford politicians of "vanity" and said that could put patients at risk.
Quote MessageIt was a great mistake to break up Shropshire in 1998; it has been a continuous entity since Saxon times. I am quite clear that it would be much better to close down Telford & Wrekin Council, put the significant savings into public services
