  1. Telford produces above-average primary school resultspublished at 15:33 Greenwich Mean Time 15 December 2016

    Telford's results in the summer's Key Stage Two tests are above the English average of 53%, the West Midlands average of 51%  and Shropshire Council's average - also 51%.

    And across the West Midlands only Solihull and Warwickshire beat Telford and Wrekin’s results that showed 56% of pupils meeting the expected standard in reading, writing and maths.

  2. Work on railway station roof completepublished at 15:17 Greenwich Mean Time 15 December 2016

    The renovation of a canopy roof at Shrewsbury's railway station has been completed on schedule.

    The roof over platforms three, four and seven has been repaired and replaced.

    Further work on the grade-II listed building will be carried out next year and Network Rail is due to replace sleepers on the track over Christmas.

    The leaders of Shropshire's two main local authorities aren't impressed by the government's announcement that they can raise council tax to help fund social care.

    Shropshire Council's Conservative leader Malcolm Pate said being allowed increase council tax by up to 6% over two years, is "not going to solve our problems. But it does show the government is acknowledging elderly care is not funded fairly".

    The leader of Labour-led Telford and Wrekin Council, Shaun Davies, tweeted, external: "Time for a true National Social Care Service funded from the central government. asking the poorest in the town to pay more is unacceptable."

  6. Telford outperforms rest of the county in education league tablepublished at 14:06 Greenwich Mean Time 15 December 2016

    Telford has outperformed the rest of the county when it comes to the percentage of primary school pupils reaching the expected standard in reading, writing and maths.

    In the Shropshire local authority area 51% of children in their final year of primary school reached that mark, while in Telford it was 56%.

    Pupils sat tough new tests in the summer and around the country, only 53% of pupils passed, compared with the 80% who passed less rigorous tests in 2015.

  7. Council tax rises to cover social care costspublished at 13:50 Greenwich Mean Time 15 December 2016

    The government has set out new measures aimed at boosting funding for social care in England - local authorities have been told they can bring forward council tax rises to cover costs over the next two years.

    The communities secretary Sajid Javid also told MPs £240m cut from the New Homes Bonus, which compensates councils for building new homes, would be spent on adult social care next year.

    Labour said no new money was being offered to tackle the "crisis".

    A petition to stop the redevelopment of Meole Brace roundabout in Shrewsbury has been rejected by Shropshire councillors.

    More than 4,500 people signed the document claiming they hadn't been properly consulted on the scheme. 

    This claim was rejected by Conservative councillor Simon Jones who said public meetings had taken place and despite calls from members of the Liberal Democrat group to hold a consultation into the plan it was decided that the scheme would go ahead.

    A Telford father died in a crash, external after stopping his vehicle on a section of motorway where there was no hard shoulder in operation, an inquest heard.

    AFC Telford United says 139 fans decided to buy a share in the football club.

    That means one or more people or organisations must have bought a large number of shares, because the club says 32% of the 5,000 shares were sold.

    No individual shareholder has taken up the maximum 1,000 shares though.

  13. AFC Telford United to make fresh push to sell remaining sharespublished at 12:14 Greenwich Mean Time 15 December 2016

    Shares in AFC Telford United may go back on sale in the new year, with the football club saying it still wants to sell all 5,000 of them.

    The issue will be discussed when the board meets for its AGM, before the end of February.

    A statement, external released by the board this morning says the limit on how many shares an individual could hold was put in place to win the approval of the Supporters Trust, but it may now decide to lift that 20% cap, after two overseas investors were put off by it.

  15. Potential investors had 'benefit of football club' at heartpublished at 11:52 Greenwich Mean Time 15 December 2016

    AFC Telford United says the two potential investors who pulled out at the 11th hour were both based overseas, but had "an upbringing and background from Telford".

    It also says that after lengthy discussions, it was satisfied both wanted to invest for "the benefit of the football club".

    Both withdrew because of the cap on the number of shares they were allowed to buy.

    AFC Telford United says it has sold about a third of the shares it up for sale, raising nearly £170,000.

    The club says it was disappointed by the take-up and also revealed two potential overseas investors were put off, because they were limited in the number of shares they were allowed to buy.

    The double gold-medal winning horse Big Star, will be visiting a Whitchurch stud farm in the new year.

  20. Police to continue river searchpublished at 10:33 Greenwich Mean Time 15 December 2016

    A search of the River Severn in Shrewsbury will continue this morning, following a report at 23:45 last night that someone had gone into the river near Welsh Bridge.

    Fire crews launched a rescue boat and searched the river for an hour last night, but didn't find anyone.
